New Guitar Day
After many years of wanting one, I am finally in possession of an Agile multiscale 7 string.
Here are the specs of my Pendulum Pro 72427 EB EMG Black Flame...
Multi-Scale design with scale range of 24" to 27"
5 piece, neck-through design
Dual angled EMG 808 active 8 pickups
Custom Cepheus individual saddle bridges
Mahogany body
Ebony fretboard with no markers - position markers are located on the side of the neck
24 extra jumbo 2.9mm frets and a 13.7" (350mm) radius neck for fast play
Grover die cast tuners
Uniform neck profile for ultra fast playing
This guitar was bought as a "B stock" unit because they did not have anymore in stock, and I didn't want to wait for weeks. The flaw in this particular guitar is that the bottom string is misaligned. Hopefully, it does not affect playability too badly.

Re: New Guitar Day
as a guitar noob, what's a seven string? I think I've heard of a six string (is that in Bon Jovi's song Summer of '69?) how does it compare to other guitars.
I want to learn more about them... I want to learn to play a guitar (or a ukulele but that's because I'm weird)

Re: New Guitar Day
A 7 string guitar is simply a guitar with an additional string.
This particular guitar is special, because the scale for the top string (high E) is 24" while the scale for the bottom string (low A) is 27". I don't know how long it will be before I am used to this, but it's still super cool. At least now I will not have to worry about flabby strings.

Re: New Guitar Day
alright explain that in real simple terms. So my understanding is that by scale you mean length (am I right?) how does that effect sound and the play?

Re: New Guitar Day
There are three ways that you can change the frequency at which a string vibrates.
The length of the string (the scale).
The thickness of the string (the gauge).
The tightness of a string (the tension).
So assuming that the scale and the gauge remain constant, you lower the pitch of the string by loosening it. Eventually, the string because something akin to a wet spaghetti strand.
You can increase the string gauge, but that starts to affect playability if it goes too high.
Changing the scale means that you can increase tension without having to use heavier strings.
The advantage of a multiscale guitar, is that it allows you to keep a more consistent tension between strings. It also helps with intonation, but that's another story.

Re: New Guitar Day
I'm definitely going to need to google this stuff because it is going slightly over my head but that could just be the headache.
What sort of guitar is a good starter guitar? I don't see myself starting on something as pretty as your new baby, but I definitely want to make the right choice here...

Re: New Guitar Day
Fortunately the defect has no real effect on playability. I'll have to adjust my technique a bit, but that's about it.

Well Sev, I commend you, because, with my guitars I really don't fiddle. If there's a problem with them I take them to Andy and he sorts it out and he sends the bill. I fiddled once and fucked the thing up, so I stick to what I know and let the professionals look after my axes.

Re: New Guitar Day
Finally seven gets a seven string.
BTW seven string standard tuning is B E A D G B E.
Drop A is A1-E2-A2-D3-G3-B3-E4 which is a much muddier sound than a simulated drop A on a six string which will play similar to drop D except the guitar is dropped by a perfect forth and the 6 string a entire step down A1-E2-A2-D3-F#3-B3.
Notice the familiar sound?
Mad 1 step down A D G C F A D:

Re: New Guitar Day
Why would drop A on a 7 string sound middier, simply by virtue of the guitar having seven strings.
And why are you telling me about tunings? I know that drop A on a 6 string is different to drop A on a 7 string. There were a few times that I tuned the 6 string as though it was a seven string simply missing the top string, which I barely ever use anyway.
Because of the extended scale, the bottom strings sounds very tight, even with the stock strings.

I think Sev he's just imparting knowledge that maybe he thinks would be helpful for you... considering he has worked in the music industry before...
And I personally enjoyed reading his response... I didn't know that stuff...

I guess, I just don't like people assuming that I'm ignorant of such things.
Also this is what I meant by "simulating" a 7 string on a 6 string:
6 string drop A tuning: A1-E2-A2-D3-F#3-B3
Simulated 7 string drop A tuning: A1-E2-A2-D3-G3-B3

Not that assuming people have prior knowledge all the time is much better. Rather ask whether they're familiar with a concept.Sev wrote:I guess, I just don't like people assuming that I'm ignorant of such things.

Re: New Guitar Day
I guess so.
It reminds me of the time that my father told the guy at the main San Diego motorcycle dealership "that I was very knowledgeable".
His response? "Knowledge able about phones, I'm sure."
I went out of my way to correct him at every opportunity that I had.
"This FJ-09 has a 900cc engine." "No, it has an 847cc engine."

Re: New Guitar Day
I do the same when it's a subject I know. like music theory, song genres and horses...
but I have nothing on guitars or pretty much any instrument that isn't my voice or a flute and even on the flute I'm an intermediate.
I wanna learn and you, Inpw, Ivic, all yall are smart at this... I admire that a lot.

This is my old Bullet Strat by Fender I use to play for five years already. And this is my quite new active Bass guitar by Aria Maybe I shall buy new Strat more than a Bass x) Both guitars were bought unexpectedly. I just went to music shop, saw them and I had to buy them. x)

That's a nice looking base, can you take a picture of the back of it.
And I've often walked into a music store with no intention of buying anything, only to leave with a guitar or a pedal in hand.
