What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
There are threads for doing and listening, but not for reading, so I'm making a place where we can discuss books, novels, comics and everything else to do with the literary arts.
I'm reading "The Dead Zone" by Stephen King. I've read it at least three times before, but it's one of those books that stay good no matter how many times you read it. The ending gets me every time...
Also reading Naruto Manga (I'm only on Chapter 280, so no spiolers please!)

Actively I'm reading "You can't read this book" by Nick Cohen. It's all about freedom of speech and censorship (and self-censorship) in the modern world.
Less actively I'm reading "Robinson Crusoe" by Defoe. I say less actively because I started a few years ago, it's hard reading and I've stalled.

Do ebooks count? If so then I am busy working my way through "C++ for everybody".
Fiction wise I am re-reading "Kraken" by my favourite author, China Mieville.

Floating Dragon, by Peter Straub. He's a friend of Stephen King, but this book isn't very good. Very slow pace.

Like a book i once tried to read, 1000 pages or so long and by page 150 i still hadnt been introduced to the main protagonist. Also non important characters were talking bout a very long and tedious history of manners and etiquette in magic
I decided it wasnt something i could finish within 20 years

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
Hehe, in that case you should probably avoid the "Braided Path" trilogy. It's an utterly fantastic trilogy once you reach page 192, but before then it's real effort to read. I read quite a lot, and those first 191 pages took me about 2 to 3 weeks to overcome, but once i'd reached page 192, I flew through the rest of the 1st book and the 2 sequels in roughly the same time. Anyone else found any books like that?

I once read a book (i know, Punk read something!) forget the name now.... but it took me roughly four months to get through the damn book because the first 100 pages were like a snail pulling a steam engine backwards up everest.... and then there were three damn awesome pages giving you some hope for the future.... then another snail came along and said that the first snail was on the wrong side of the mountain so we started again for another about 80 pages....and so forth and so forth....

Artist most common for that style of writing is Robin Hobb, stories always start off brutaly slow and end on a high, I've read about 6 of her books and all followed the exact same path. She writes really well though so only reason i made it to the end each time

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
My own books are way different. I know I can't really talk, since none of them have come out yet, but I try to grab the reader's attention with the very first paragraph, then I try to put a climax on every page (or at least something interesting or funny). I don't think I've ever written a single page where something doesn't actually happen. Carla Potgieter, the editor at Kwela, complimented me on my super-fast pace. It was the first positive feedback I ever got. (They still rejected me, though.)

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
@Obsidian....Robin Hobb is amazing! Try "The Soldier Son" trilogy (my personal favorite of hers) and tell me those books start slow. And also the biggest cliffhanger ending/awesome start to books 2/3 that iv'e ever seen. Dammit, if you're coming to the braai on Sunday, I will bring the entire trilogy for you...

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
Funny thing is... I have them all here on my shelf
I did love them but the beginning of 2 was a little tedious for my liking, ending was like another person had taken over
Woman authors do tend the look at things from emotional side rather than keeping stroy driven by bullets and katana's
I do like fast paced though, just personal preferance ^^
so you got at least one person keen for ur book contrast

I just finished the fourth chapter of Two Kinds. It's not the most sophisticated of comics, but I do find it hugely entertaining nonetheless.

Thats a great comic, if a little revealing at times , pretty funny too
The artist does like to make all his characters sexy, so no one minds when they strut around without clothes xD (not that u can actually see anything mind you, artist keeps it all tasteful)

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
Haha, Twokinds was my inspiration and the final tipping point that made me define myself as a furry. As, TotemCoyote agrees above me, Natani is definitely my favorite, her struggle with her sexuality was probably the best comparison to my own confusion over my sexuality i've found. Note my species is listed as wolf-keidran rather than just wolf .
Just out of interest, those incredibly addicted to Twokinds might notice my signature at the bottom. It's from this pic, which my reading of was the singular moment of my becoming a furry, that quote has become my inspiration in life and the best explanation of my pansexuality I have ever found.

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
That's brilliant, hey? TwoKinds contributed to me being a furry.
Also, Grayhound, you may notice that I am also not simply coyote but coyote keidran(not that their's such thing... yet. I may have slightly hinted it to Tom himself, lol).
I guess it really links us and what it would be like to be a an anthro in real life, and what consequences it may hold.

I'm finaly up to date with TwoKinds. The first page of chapter 15 (20120509a) was so emotional I nearly lost it right there in the library!

Don't worry Contrast, thanks to kind caring rich people like TotemCoyote, Twokinds will soon be updated twice a week. While you wait, you can do what I do and read xkcd cartoons (updated three times a week) which is what I am reading right now.....(cheating here a little I know but I still cant find a decent proper book to read).

Aww, thanks Grayhound. I am too much of a fan not to helped with the fundraiser for TwoKinds. Tom Fischbach will be having a run of the Hardcover copies for sale for $40 each(I think) as soon as the rewards for the fundraiser have been completed and shipped out. I am jealous for the person who payed $5000 to be immortalized as a main character in TwoKinds... but I couldn't and cannot afford to pay that much. lolGrayhound wrote:Don't worry Contrast, thanks to kind caring rich people like TotemCoyote, Twokinds will soon be updated twice a week.
