Nash's Art Nook

Post by Nasheera »

Well!

After about a year of me being unable to art, it seems as if 2017 has got me back up on my feet again. From here on out, I'll be posting my art, both good and bad, right here!

This year I'm going to figure out my digital drawing pad, so you'll be seeing all digital progress here too.

I'm still quite rusty, but here we go.
Enjoy! :)

That's impressive for grade 6... Also I like your flowers. :3 I think that somewhat incomplete look they have is actually really cool.

A furry-at-heart even in grade six, huh? :P

Fantastic work as always, Nash. I particularly appreciate your grasp on anatomy in more active poses. For many (including myself), limbs and especially hands (which may as well be the devil incarnate in artwork) are hellish. Keep up the good work!

An idea for my dream business logo.

Hopefully!

Also, could anyone recommend a good, free digital art program?

GIMP is my tool of choice. It's a bit of an acquired taste but it's quite powerful and versatile.

I can personally testify to GIMP being good to use; I still use it occasionally, and although it does lack several features that would belong to Photoshop and does have one or two frustrating shortcomings (for example, in selecting a portion of the image), it is still easy to use, free and can pack quite an artistic punch in the right hands. It is ideal for beginner (and even intermediate) digital artists.

Paint Tool SAI is also quite good and is used by quite a few digital artists. Yet other free alternatives include Paint.NET, and if you'd prefer a web-based program, Pixlr and SumoPaint. My personal recommendation is to start with the latest version of GIMP.

That all being said, I am inclined to add (though you seem already to be aware of it): Remember that the built-in functions and features of a program can give you more variety and potential, but ultimately the quality of the art is determined by you, the artist. So begin with a free program with basic features - even if somewhat crappy by comparison to Photoshop - and hone your talents there. Spend time on practice, rather than money on products. ;)

Eh? It has plenty of selection tools: rectangle, ellipse, lasso, fuzzy, by colour, scissors, foreground, and even more if you combine them all and use the hotkeys. I've never had a problem selecting what I want, and I've had to select some rather odd regions.

Also SAI is technically not free.

That is true - it does have a variety of selection tools. However, if you wish, for example, to move a selected portion of the image around, from my experience one needs to create a floating layer and then combine that layer with the original one once one is done, which can be a little cumbersome at times relative to some other programs which allow you to manipulate the selection immediately. :P Or perhaps I am missing a quicker way to do it?

You are - when you have your selection, you can go Select -> Float from either menu bar or context menu, which is also hotkeyed to Ctrl + Shift + L.
I just find it faster to go Ctrl + X, Ctrl + V because that only requires the left hand, but that's just me.

Alternatively, the floating selection can be promoted to a layer (in Layers dialog, right click the floating selection -> To new layer), which you can then move around as much as you like; you don't need to anchor it again once you're done.

The whole point of GIMP not doing this by default is to allow you to manipulate the selection itself.

Old dogs might proverbially be unable to be taught new tricks, but it seems old cows can still teach new tricks! :P Just kidding.
Thank you for the advice, Leeward! When I resume drawing this evening, I shall give that a try.

I used to have GIMP many many moons ago, and I remember despising it. I'm sorry! Personal preference I suppose. Although that was when my PC was a total assnugget and never ran any programs properly. I was constantly being kicked out and my scribbles rarely saved.

Krita sounds familiar, it might have been the last program I was playing around with.

Thank you all for the suggestions! Will have a look at all of them before downloading the perfect one :)

I used to hate GIMP too back when I first tried it a few years back. It's changed a lot since, so I would recommend giving it a second chance.

Recently finished this base for a member of the forum!
A donkey/dragon/zebra dude :)
Will be attempting a thin foam base head next, if I can gather enough scraps! I should also consider drawing something again...

Hi Nasheera, I love your artwork! It really is very good. Keep it up! :D

Out of interest, what inspired you to draw the knight?

Honestly I can't think of any donkey/dragon/zebra hybrids on this forum, but maybe I have just been too inactive lately. I am curious to see how your project turns out though, and who it belongs to. Good luck! :)

Thank you! :)

The knight was for a friend of mine who was going through a tough time. I drew it in hopes to remind him to stay strong and keep fighting until he's conquered all his challenges.
