Anatomical sketch
Anatomical sketch
I got bored during the load shedding today and decided to make an auto-portrait so that I can eventually stop making long-ass descriptions instead providing reference art. I'm about 75% satisfied with it so far. There are a few details and relative sizes and positions I want to tweak, but the overall shape is pretty much what I want, so what I don't like I'll edit digitally. I'll play around with different colour schemes and post a coloured version or two later. This version is shrunken for the sake of file size.
It is similar to yet distinct from a Tauren in that it is an anthropomorphic bovine with breasts instead of an udder, but the differences are straighter legs, more upright posture (although still hunched), longer hair and body fur with feathering on the joints, a more gentle expression, and more realistic cow-like features: hooves, tail tuft, dentition (cows don't have upper front teeth, and certainly no protruding sharp teeth), and position of the horns and ears. I didn't change the eye position, because one of the key changes in anthropomorphisation is binocular vision.
Please let me know what you think.

Re: Anatomical sketch
looks standard for a paladin nice drawing Leeward though that bovine needs better armour

Re: Anatomical sketch
Don't you know? It's all about the Inverse Armor Effect.
Re: Anatomical sketch
I'm going to make a proper fancy design, that's just a placeholder. I was thinking of naming it "Facts" and carving it into the side.Moon_Gazer wrote:That's quite a small hammer you got there XD
Thank you! Well that character isn't a paladin, just a bit of a savage. It is a reference after all, hence the underwear.Titanreaper wrote:looks standard for a paladin nice drawing Leeward though that bovine needs better armour
Not in this case.Alexander wrote:Don't you know? It's all about the Inverse Armor Effect.
So... any comments on the correctness of the drawing? Sorry for asking but I'm insecure about my drawing skills.

Re: Anatomical sketch
I think it looks neat!
The only thing that strikes me is that the right leg of the character looks like it might connect to the pelvis a little bit too far down. I took the freedom of doodling a little bit on your drawing, with the red showing what it is like at the moment and the green showing what it'd look like if you moved the hip a little bit. Hope it helps and that I don't come off as nitpicky!

Re: Anatomical sketch
Not at all, that's exactly the type of criticism I was looking for. I can't improve if I never get corrected. Thanks a lot for your trouble, Kenjo!

Re: Anatomical sketch
Maybe the legs and arms could be a little bit more muscular? This is a powerful beast, after all.
Re: Anatomical sketch
I've already made her more muscular than I am, I wouldn't want to go too far as that might result in a caricature. But you're right, I could add a little more flesh, if only to make it believable that she can wield that hammer.

Re: Anatomical sketch
Well it could be a magic hammer, +20 strength enchantment
Even savages can have magic hammers.

Re: Anatomical sketch
Inking done! I changed the right hip, added some muscle, and fixed a few details.

Re: Anatomical sketch
Yeah, that's much better. Now she looks as though she could actually swing that hammer.

Re: Anatomical sketch
Don't you know? It's buckling under its own weight?
Re: Anatomical sketch
Well, like I said, I still want to design a fancy pally-style hammer, that croquet mallet for giants is just a placeholder. The block will also probably be replaced.

That's great! I like the little tufts of hair on the legs and arms, didn't notice them in the first pic

Re: Anatomical sketch
Why did you decide to go with off white for hair?
Re: Anatomical sketch
It's actually light grey, and I'm putting a lot of highlights in it so that it's almost white. If I'd made the flat colour white, it would have been very difficult to shade. I decided on white because it implies wisdom and respectability, and makes a nice contrast. Red was a bit too wild for me, and sort of clashed with the chocolate brown body.
Also, sneak preview of the shading in my new avatar.

Re: Anatomical sketch
So... did you fix the hammer?
Re: Anatomical sketch
No, I'll do that later. For now I just want to finish the character so I can make a reference sheet. Eventually.
Re: Anatomical sketch
And here she is, all shaded. I removed some of the ink on her face to let the light and shadow bring out the shape instead.

Re: Anatomical sketch
The stomach area looks a bit funny, I would say.
Re: Anatomical sketch
It's a bit gaunt, which was sort of done on purpose, but I suppose making it less obvious would make her look healthier.
