Cute or Hideous?

This is something that has fascinated me for a long time. The surprisingly thin line that can be found between "cute" and "hideous". We see it all the time, both in real life and in artworks. Dogs, cats, babies, fictional characters, and even certain insects. All these things and more can skirt the line between cute and hideous, and what might be adorable for some might be an abomination for others.

This game is for those who've found something that fits the bill, something that falls neatly between the realms of ugly and huggable, monstrous and charming, disgusting and squee-inducing.

I'll start with this character, Sachi, from the visual novel "Love at First Sight".

What do I think personally? Well, in my humble opinion, Sachi is absolutely adorable. Some of it is probably due to the bandages creating a subconscious desire to protect her (a classic moe trait), but even so, I really like this character and the art style lends itself well to her story.

Conversely, I must admit that, were this a real-life person and not just a piece of art, I'd probably be disgusted. That just goes to show how art can do things that would never work in real life, and how the human brain can interpret the same thing in completely different ways depending on the medium in which it is portrayed.

But what about you guys? Feel free to share your opinions, or even post some examples of your own. :)

This is how I feel about half the deformed atrocities that are modern animal "breeds" with tons of glaringly obvious health issues that we created for our own amusement.

That's not really what you asked for though, sorry.

Disgusting is what that is.... Brings the art of anime into disrepute

The reason why the Japanese can sexualize anything in to girlfriends, is because all they do is add a 14-year-old vagina and boobs on it and make it submissive as possible.
(From household objects too crazy monsters – anything can be made fuckable and vulnerable if you add the right body and personality too it)

The reality is cruel.
I watched a documentary about primordial dwarfism.
The only time they get married is when they are rich movie actors.

I think you misunderstand anime... And I think you also forgot you're here in the midst of the furry fandom. The FF can sexualize anything apparently, even a puppy

If you think about, nearly everything we watch, read and possibly even listen to gets parodied or sexualized to a persons preference that they get all pent up and yadda, yadda, yadda. It's sick but there's little we can do about it.

Cuteness and being hideous to me is more based upon a persons personality than outward looks. Sure, I will judge (we all do) but after I get to know a person then I become less judging and more accepting if there is nothing you can do about your physical appearance.

So the writer/artist who made that cyclops did not intentionally make it align with tropes that are conmon practice in anime, and aimed at a demographic? (The reason that girl is the way she is, is because sex sells.)

That girl is designed to be a waifu.
And the eye thing is how this person wants to stand out in the sea of waifu.
(or perhaps create a new fetish to capitalize on... this happens in Japan apparently)

Sure... how does this make me misunderstand anime?
Or do you think i dislike anime with "cute girls" in it?

those cyclopses with tails kinda dragged me into the cyclops tolerance camp. but i've actually had a theory about this for quite some time. you know how buck teeth glasses and subtle but stereotypical blemishes on beauty sometimes become an enhancing factor over time? for instance in school there was this girl with a huge pink birthmark over her face that kinda made her look like a freaking burn victim... but over time people grew accustom to it and even started saying it was pretty... she did not change but people were desensitized to the blemish and came to accept it. Owo i mean it really was just that thing on her face, the rest of her looked perfectly normal. i believe this is a natural way species protects itself from deformities while still not forfeiting evolution. if something can survive long enough to desensitize other animals to its abnormality, the abnormality may not be a handicap. in act if these individuals are present in the absence of normal individuals it may even be indicative of a beneficial trait.

UwU/ "in absence of pretty girls, the ugly girls magically become petty" so the large array of freaky monster fetishes just goes to show how much of the male population are virgins.

Wow, I didn't expect a few pics of a moe cyclops girl to spark a conversation like this. O_O
But that kinda is the whole point of this thread, to share pics of things that some people find cute and others find disgusting, so... I guess it's working?

Anyway, take a look at what I found this morning...
Albino Owl.jpg
An albino owl! :o
So what's the verdict? Cute or hideous? Adorable or creepy? A flufferpuff or the spawn of Satan?
My vote is for cute! :3

I think you might actually be onto something there.

It's cute for sometime but after awhile it's just distasteful and unnecessary and people will leave you if you don't get your act together and stop your shit.

Hairless cats can be cute, but I wouldn't have one by choice. Again because of the whole humans laughing at their own creations' expense thing.

How dare you! Falcore is bae <3
I've wanted my own Falcore since I was like 6 years old (Yes my mom let me watch that when I was 6 and yes Artax traumatised me >.> )
Falcore's just so big and cute and fluffy. :D

No, I'm with Animew on this one, and I know exactly why. It's because Falcore is supposed to be a dragon, but he has a human's eyes, lips, teeth and nose. That just makes him look kinda freaky, in my opinion. It's like my brain is trying to see a human, but then all the dragon bits get in the way. And then, when my brain tries to see a dragon, all the human bits get in the way.

I know most people will disagree with me when I say this, but I think Totoro is creepy as fuck. It's the blank, unfocused stare and the perpetual smile that does it for me. And what's he doing hanging out with little girls all the time!? It's just creepy! >.<
