Puzzles & Riddles !
PUZZLES & RIDDLES !
The Objective: To create and solve logical, mathematical, spatial (puzzles) or abstract (riddles) problems!
The Rules:
♢ There are two roles in the game at any time: The riddler, who posts a riddle or puzzle, and the solvers, who post their answers or solutions - all in this thread.
♢ The riddler may provide a maximum of three hints if the solvers experience difficulty; should it still fail to be solved, the solution can then be revealed. In this case, the 'winner' and next riddler is selected at random using an indexing system and this site. (I shall do this.)
♢ When a correct solution is posted by a solver, the riddler must announce that is correct.
♢ When a solver correctly answers the problem and/or is the first to do so, he or she becomes the new riddler, and may post a puzzle or riddle of his or her own.
♢ Puzzles and riddles should have a single, unambiguous answer. (For example, "what is 1 + 1?" rather than "what colour is often termed 'warm'?")
♢ Puzzles and riddles should not require extensive background knowledge, such as complex mathematical formulae or knowledge of history. If this is required, please provide it in your question post. Problems should preferably be capable of being solved by using only critical thinking rather than knowledge. (For example, if I present a puzzle that is geometrical in nature and requires knowledge of the Pythagorean theorem, I will briefly post its formula in my question post.)
♢ Puzzles and riddles should preferably be created by the riddler him- or herself. This is to prevent solvers from searching for the answer on the Internet.
Okay, enough rules! Let us begin!
----------
To start, let me offer a simple, straightforward one:
Point. Line. Equilateral triangle.
What comes next in this series?

Correct!
Leeward, you are now the new riddler. You may post a riddle or puzzle of your own.

Re: Puzzles & Riddles !
Over thought it and wanted to say the answer is a triangular prism.
Because it has 4 points (3+1) and 6 lines (3*2).
The lines can also all be the same length.
And it has three dimensions ( from 0 to 1 to 2 and then 3).

Consider a pond with lily pads in it, all round and of equal size. Each morning, the lily pads cover double the area they did the day before. It takes 36 days for the lily pads to cover the entire pond, excluding the necessary gaps between them, assuming they fit as tightly as possible. How many days did it take for them to cover a quarter of the pond?

(Because I was the previous riddler, I shall sit out this round and allow the others an opportunity. If they have not posted in a few hours, I will post my answer.)

They will cover a quarter of the pond on the 34th day. (half on the 35th and fully on the final day, 36.)

Boom, didn't get fooled by all the useless info or fall for the trap of assuming linear as opposed to exponential growth. Have a cookie.

You are a passenger on a airplane.
In which seats can't you sit?
(This excludes the cockpit and flight attendants seats. It is also not the other other passengers seats.)

Sitting this one out, although I have a guess.

Re: Puzzles & Riddles !
Highly doubt my answer is going to be correct... Yet, for the sake of a good game, I will try:
The life rafts.
(I was initially going to guess the seat of the air traffic controller... but that is outside the plane.
I then became paranoid, and started examining the wording, such as why you used "seats" instead of "seat" or why you used "in which seats" rather than "on which seats". XP)

Re: Puzzles & Riddles !
That's not the answer.
You are right about the preposition tho (it should be on, but "in" gives a hint).

... The toilet seat?
Re: Puzzles & Riddles !
That's what my guess was going to be. Although that only applies during take-off and landing.

Interpreting "seat" as "butt", anyone's but your own?

I see you are struggling a bit.

You can totally sit in other people's "seats". That's what Dutch chimneys are for.Leeward wrote:Interpreting "seat" as "butt", anyone's but your own?
(But if you tried that on a plane you'd probably get arrested. >.>)

Re: Puzzles & Riddles !
I am beginning to clutch at straws here...
A seat reserved for babies and infants - a baby lies in it rather than on it, and we would be too large to fit in it, hence we cannot sit on nor in it?

Re: Puzzles & Riddles !
Not the life rafts, not the toilet, not baby seats...
One is physically incapable ("can't") of sitting in this seat, yet not due to size...
There are more than one ("seats")...
I think perhaps another hint is in order.
I hope you are not trolling us, Cape.

The seats at the airport, or anywhere that isn't on the plane really.Cape_F0X wrote:You are a passenger on a airplane.

Not trolling.
Hint: You can't sit on seats that don't exist.
(If they did they would be in the plane, so no dice Rakuen.)

Wait....
There is a phrase: "to fly by the seat of one's pants."
So... One's pants would be the seat.

First I thought air marshall's seat but I'm not sure there are many of those usually and they're not prime seating.
I would've thought some other meaning of seat but everything suggests physical seats.
Can't sit in a different class would fit the preposition but those are still other passenger's seats.
Planes just don't have spare seats standing around. They make a big effort to fill every single one.
So... now I'm thinking perhaps you said "on" an aeroplane instead of "in" an aeroplane. And if you're on the plane then you can't sit in your own seat and that would be the best place to sit. Of course that could just be bad grammar. It was followed by the wrong article and the American spelling of aeroplane but I'll make it my final guess.

Re: Puzzles & Riddles !
Don't feel bad.
I might have stretched the "Puzzles and riddles should not require extensive background knowledge" rule.
The answer is Row 13, because it does not exist due to superstition.

Re: Puzzles & Riddles !
... Oh, Cape.
Not a bad riddle at all, but it does require some background knowledge.
As per the rules, since no-one solved it successfully, I shall assign a number to each solver who participated and then randomly select a winning number. They are as follows:
Azure - 1
Leeward - 2
Rakuen - 3.
(Contrast did post in the thread, but offered no answer. )
Here is the result: 2. (For proof, see the attached screenshot).
That means it is Leeward who is the next riddler.
