You learn something new every day.

Come in, relax, play with your friends! You can find something for everybody here. You can even find threads with no particular point at all, other than a good time! You can even start up some role playing.

You learn something new every day.

#1

Post by Leeward »

As the title implies, I am going to attempt to post here (almost) every day to share something new (and hopefully interesting) that I recently learned. If I miss a day, feel free to stand in for me.

Day 1: Suddenly increasing facial blood pressure (by holding one's breath, hanging upside down, induced vomiting, or even strangulation) can cause capillaries to burst, leaving tiny red marks called petechiae, particularly on the eyelids. They are harmless and usually disappear after a few days.

Night before last I had an upset stomach from a hot chocolate that had been made with not-so-fresh milk, and after forcibly throwing it up I looked in the mirror and nearly had a panic attack. Frantic Googling ensued. #HypochondriacProblems

Haha that's quite odd, I only learnt that recently too, anyhow are we allowed to post our own things here too?

I guess so if you feel like it, but the idea was to have a fact-a-day type thing going. Kind of like Ivic's AMA thread but not at all.

I was referring to this:

which taken out of context could be seen to have an omitted verb, much like this old meme.

In other words, I had no idea what you meant, up until 30 seconds ago when I realised that you meant Sev should make me more coffee.

Gosh I really am on stupid pills today, aren't I? Sev! Stop spiking my coffee!

I know Bartok when I see him, since he's one of, like, only three anthropomorphic bats in all of mainstream entertainment!

Did you know he got his own movie after Anastasia? "Bartok the Magnificent". Kelsey Grammer was in it. :P

Yes I knew Bartok had his own movie after Anastasia, yes that's the exact pic I hurriedly tweaked, and yes I did make myself throw up because I was horribly nauseous and wanted to go sleep, I don't normally do that.

Rouge from Sonic, maybe?
There's also Bloody Bat-chan from Foxy Rena, but she's not exactly mainstream. :P

Wow this went off topic fast. To bring it back to education : Day 2?: One in four South African schools do not offer maths in matric curriculum.
We are drowning in conformity.

Are you serious? So then, where and how do they expect students to get into engineering?

I dont know how this could be allowed to happen. My guess is they will end up as BA students(nothing wrong with BA students) or they wont go to university

I'm pretty sure you could sue the school for that.

One school that I was in would disallow you from writing the Cambridge exams under their name unless you had at least a 70% average.

The ANC could have learnt a thing or two from them.

That's completely different from not allowing you to take the subject at all. You can still pass some kind of exam if not the Cambridge, right?

You would still write the exam, but as an "independent candidate".

The point is, the school was schewing its results.

What does Bluetooth and Vikings have in common?

The term "Bluetooth" and it's logo confused me for a long time...
Turns out, Harald Bluetooth was a Viking, famous for uniting nations back in tenth century, (958-970)
The developer of Bluetooth took inspiration from this uniting, and wanted to unite wireless standards.
Image

And the logo?
Image
It's his sigil, as it appeared on ancient runes, and also his initials.

Fun fact: you can create petechiae on your hand by grabbing tightly around the wrist, and then pumping more blood into the hand (by opening and clenching your fist repeatedly), resulting your hand becoming inflated.

Men have an extra appendage with which to experiment using this principle. Try it, it's fun. :)
Hahaha!
