Okay, but that should be the first thing that you replace, the CPU is fine.

Eh not bad, not bad. Just be careful on going too HAM when you upgrade your GPU. The VS550 doesn't have the best voltage droop / ripple at higher current draws. That being said, you could easily, easily run a GTX970/980 off of that.

Got my first laptop the other day and it's quite a nifty little thing if I do say so myself. So far it has been able to run absolutely everything I've tried.

I'm not sure if this thread is intended solely for custom-built desktops but I'll post the specs anyway.

CPU: Intel Celeron N2840 @ 2.16GHz
GPU: Intel HD Graphics
RAM: 2GB DDR3 @ 666MHz
HDD: 465GB Seagate (SATA)
Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard 2213
OS: Windows 8.1 and Linux Mint 17.1 (Both 64-bit)

Peripherals:
Mouse: BW-35 from A4 Tech
Unidentified earphones from Philips.

Soooo, my msi GT70 Died about a month ago.

I have been back with my family in JHB for the holidays and since my main rig is in CT I had to throw something together to meet my computing needs while I am up here. This will sort of be replacing the family PC when I leave to go back to CT.

so the specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel Pentium G3298 @ 4.5Ghz
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance LP @1600Mhz
MoBo: Asus Z97-C
GPU: Radeon R9-270
Cooler: CM Hyper D92
Case: Corsair Carbide Spec-2
Memory: 256GB Crucial MX100 SSD & 2TB WD Green HDD
PSU: Corsair VS450

Thank you Mr Otter :) . I pride myself with good cable management.
Not much space in that case to manage cables but I made it work.

I made a bit of an error in the specs though. it is a Carbide Spec-1, not a Spec-2.

I was thinking of getting that combo since it looks cool and its a lot cheaper than buying them separately. Does it work nicely?

Well... I love my GTX 770... But I think I need to focus on getting a 970, it has so much more potential!

GTX960/970/980 are so overpriced over here. Especially the GTX980.

I am not gonna bother with buying computer hardware in South Africa anymore.

Agreed wholeheartedly, which is why I have not upgraded my Hardware since I bought it in the US back in 2010.

Holy overkill PSU.
You're gonna be using like 400w peak load (when overclocked too lol)... You only needed 500-550w .-.

Coulda saved some money and got better idle / load low efficiency :p

Also if your case has feet on the bottom that raise it, flip the PSU around - oh and try organize the cables better. Like the CPU 8-pin behind the mobo tray etc.

edit- and don't use VGA - it's more of a sin than HDMI.

I think I got the 500W PSU from a different supplier for cheaper than the 400 and something PSU from Amazon. So I saved money and got more power for future upgrades.

Huh... I didn't notice that with power supply. Wonder why he put it that way.

I said to organize the cables better! But not all of them would've reached if they'd gone behind the motherboard. That was quite frustrating.

The screen only came with a VGA cable. But at the current settings I don't think there's likely to much point in changing it.

I read the PSU as 850w lol...

VGA->DVI is awful. You're going from analog->digital. Max 6-bit and some awful flickering (at least I always got) is bound to happen.

You can also buy cable extensions that are sleeved, look nice and help you tuck the cables behind your mobo tray.

Just noticed this now.

FYI why not to use a TV for a screen:
  • Horrible PPI
  • Horrible colours
  • Horrible contrast ratio
  • Horrible input latency on almost all TVs
  • Don't go beyond 1080p
  • Awful frame interpolation to make "120hz / 200Hz / 240Hz" etc.
  • More expensive

I'm not a computer person and my knowledge of these things is... limited but:
Viktor has a massive television screen linked up to his PC. of the things you said I understand contrast ratio and colour and he got no problems with those...

I dont understand the rest (goes way over my head) so I'll take your word for it...

Like, using an already-existing TV for a computer monitor is cool - makes sense because it's cost-effective. But purposely buying a TV to use as a computer monitor is not what you should do.

I can't. :/ There's a gap for the wire to come from the back in the corner but the cables aren't long enough (or more accurately aren't flexible enough) to go around the back and twist to get in the right position.

Ah that sucks, maybe when you change cases...

Also I see your GPU seems to be sagging quite a lot, that could lead to issues in the future.

I'd suggest applying some upward force when installing it (so that the screws hold it properly) - or installing it when the case is flat on the ground.

Alternatively, or if the above doesn't help, you could ghetto-rig / make a GPU stand like this:
