That's not the only consideration though. If Windows 7 isn't getting anything more than security patches then there's no advances to the system and it could be less enticing to developers. The last part is an issue since I'm mostly building this so I can play games which don't otherwise work on Linux. Flash on Linux only gets security updates and so at times it's pretty useless. It's easier to switch to another browser for a page or two than to switch OS to play a game.

I don't know anything about the support period. If it's an issue to you then rather go for 8. 7 has the nice classic Windows feel to it, but 8 has faster boot time and better performance. Also 8 might support some more recent games that 7 might not. Sounds like you would prefer 8 anyway.
