Whoa... My aunt actually needs one. What ballpark price are you looking for?

Eesh I think it may be out of her reach. I will still relay the info though!

To be fair, I also choked at the price here  Anyways, I went and looked it up on the net, and in the US you'd pay around $3,000 for a new unit with a four-hour battery only. At the current exchange rate that's just a tad under R40,000, and there's probably other fees (like shipping and VAT) involved. So I think this is cheap if you need one.

There are a few specials for $2,500, but I haven't seen anything below this. Still R33,000.

I know, the issue is I'd love to offer it lower, but my mother is selling it and got into her head that's the price she's selling for

It's not a bad price for the unit. These things seems expensive.

Yeah the batteries alone are like R10k... which is why I told my cousin to show her mom this. It would really improve her quality of life in terms of independence.

Not yet but I haven't spoken to my cousin/aunt again yet. I wouldn't get my hopes up though - she only gets a very small pension. I'll ask after the long weekend (I'm in Bela Bela camping).

Also, if you can get an idea of what she would be able to pay, that would be good

She was around for lunch yesterday so I talked to her about it. It seems that the initial investment isn't what is putting her off, but rather the very high annual(?) maintenance costs as well as the replacement costs for the battery. She's decided on a small canister instead. So I guess that is a no from them. :/

Sure sure, that's a fair enough option. We went that way at first, but then dad went the machine later.

Also, if you wanna do some searching around for prices and competitiveness and suchlike for the oxygen cylinders, we went with a company called Oxygen and General.

Dad seemed happy with them.

Thanks for the tips! My aunt is on a hella-tight budget, so the cost of most oxygen solutions are prohibitive for her. It is very sad to see her struggle at family gatherings. :(

I know. Honestly, if I could the thing away for free, I would, but until I'm working, I can't, you know? So I do wish the best for her, and I hope she finds a solution that works for her

Giving it away for free is perhaps not a good option but if you don't sell it then you aren't making money either so giving it away or not selling it are financially the same. Couldn't you do it on a payment plan? If she can't afford a lump sum perhaps she can afford to pay x amount per month for y months.

Let me spell this out for you. She has a pension of R5000 a month. And aside from the initial investment of R25K+, there are annual maintenance costs of R9K which does not include periodically replacing the batteries which run R6K-R10K each.

She is also on a "oh well I'm gonna die anyway" tangent, so any long term plans or investments aren't even a consideration for her.

Similarly, Hargan needs money to keep his pot cooking. To suggest he should give away this asset for next to nothing (at R25K it is already hugely discounted) is insensitive at best to his situation.

In short, let it go. Butt out. You don't know her circumstances. You don't know Hargan's circumstances.

Hokay, so as of this morning, the system has been sold.

I do wish the best for your Aunt, and I do wish the same for you Sudan. I am sorry that she has fallen down that tangent, but doesn't mean I still can't wish her all the best.

And to end this story positively, it's gone to a lady whose own oxygen machine started cutting out badly and left her breathless at night, and thanks to the absolute, what's the word... uncaring attitude of the place she's been hiring from, she could have possibly asphyxiated at night. Her oxygen levels dropped to 78, from the acceptable range of 90-100. So it has gone to someone who needed it badly, and yes, we did get the money we needed too.

I know it sounds heartless to say it that way, but after the amount of people trying to get me to deliver it to them in a dodgy area and never actually responding to messages I give and so on and so forth, I'm kinda glad it's gone to someone who needed it and didn't try rob us for it.

With that, I presume this thread can be closed, though if you wanna keep chatting Sudan, please, by all means, drop me a pm n.n

So glad it found a good home! :) It must be a relief for your family to have a bit of financial breathing room.

My aunt has a good medical aid (thank god) who will assist with the oxygen cannisters, so although it is far less convenient, she will be fine for the moment. Thank you for caring, Hargan!
