I seriously doubt this was made with a niche target market like furries in mind. Anthropomorphic animal characters in movies (especially Disney ones) is nothing new. This just seems to be a more modern take on an old idea.

Still, it looks like it might be a nice way to spend an afternoon, as long as the story doesn't follow the same old routine as most Disney movies tend to.

No it's aimed for a general audience. Disney is not dumb enough to create a full length animation feature for a niche fandom consisting of a few thousand.

Secondly. Contrast, consider the trailer for a second. It revolves around a similar topic we discussed on the podcast a while ago it seems. it's not generally a film featuring anthro characters but rather a film about anthro characters. Or that's what I'm getting from the trailer at least. There could be some really good story work done with that concept.

Lets go further: This is might be peoples favorite part. Making the trailer and especially that Be-fur part could most likely be aimed to drag the fandom's attention and here's why.

Aiming at a internet based niche target Disney's artists are obviously pro's in creating content for is brilliant. It's an excellent marketing method to get the word out. Hell it's a film coming out in 2016 with it's trailer released a few hours ago but the views are climbing pretty fast. We talk, share on facebook and all over the web, ohhhh and we will talk. Boom the content is everywhere.

Disney is using us...

Intended with a target market in mind or not I think this will probably bring the world of furries to a much wider audience, who knows perhaps the community in SA will even benefit through some new furs joining.

I thought the stills looked dumb but seeing it in motion it does actually look pretty cool.

If they do focus on the characters being anthro, rather than it just being window dressing that could be quite interesting. However, there's usually not much done in that direction in movies even when it's got feral characters. That's probably because it's hard to imagine what it's like to be a bat. There's no easy way for a movie (visual medium) to show a character having exceptional hearing or a better than normal sense of smell or the ability to sense electric fields.

I'm weary of attributing aspects of it as being scraps tossed to the furry fandom. Does no one remember people obsessing over the phrase "furry friends" in Red Riding Hood? Puns are common and existed long before the furry fandom. We're not the only ones to find it amusing to say things like be-fur. And the trailer may be gaining lots of views (5 million in 4 days) but that's not surprising from a company with a history like Disney and whose 2014 movie made half a billion dollars and whose 2013 movie made 1.3 billion dollars. It's pretty much gaining views at the same rate as the Fallout 4 trailer (14 million in 12 days) even though the last two Fallout games together have not had the same success as Frozen and Big Hero 6.

There's quite a few people on Twitter planning to watch this in fursuits. Wonder if they actually will, given the constraints of a suit.

How about fursuiting in the cinema lobby and then taking your head off when watching? Nobody looks at other spectators unless they're making a noise or sitting on their phone, so it won't "break the magic" and you'll be able to watch. Might get a bit hot though.

I hear this shit a lot from suiters. "We need suit and do this or go to that place etc..." And it never really happens.

Most public places such as this have a problem with people wearing masks smashed into a room with other people or expensive stuff.

Not necessarily. First they will demand you leave the premises. Then they will be required to warn you that the use of force is authorised. THEN they tackle you. 8-)

If the security personnel consists of civilised human beings, that is.
If they're just meatheads with batons/mace/tazers/guns, good luck.

Canids' necks are fairly thick in proportion to their shoulders. A dachshund's neck circumference is fairly similar to that of a human.

It must be because I see his anatomy as more human than animal, so the neck looks disproportionate. His legs also seem too short and stubby for his long body. I guess I'm just used to seeing anthro foxes with normal human-length limbs.

which is what the character designers were trying to steer away from. While they want them to be identifiable as anthro animals they are steering away from the "furry" type of anthro (human proportions with fur) because they want to define this film as not just for furs but for the whole of everything.

I have a friend in America... he works as a consultant for disney and dreamworks etc. he's very cool and did the character design and development for Anna and Elsa from Frozen. Anyway we were talking and he said the movie isn't "furry"... he said that with a small amount of venom on his tongue causing me to bring up how he still owes me an apology for making me cry like a fish for killing Anna and Elsa's parents... which wasn't his fault but I blame him.

   He was a furry for a while but he had a major fallout with a bunch of furs in the US and kind of doesn't hold furs in high regard... And yet he still accepts me as a fur. He even said if I visit I get to wear my tail and he promises not to be too upset at me :D

I think what he's trying to say is that the intent was different, i.e. if Zootopia is furry because it has anthropomorphic animals, that's in the same sense that 50 Shades of Grey is a porno because it has BDSM.
