The greatest films of all time
Apparently every 10 years the British Film Institute announces a list of the 10 best films of all time. Here's the current list (well two lists). Anyone seen any of them?
Critics’ Top 10 Films of All Time
1. Vertigo
2. Citizen Kane
3. Tokyo Story
4. La Règle du jeu
5. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey
7. The Searchers
8. Man with a Movie Camera
9. The Passion of Joan of Arc
10. 8 ½
Directors’ Top 10 Films of All Time

t2. Citizen Kane
4. 8 ½
5. Taxi Driver
6. Apocalypse Now
t7. The Godfather
t7. Vertigo

I've heard of some of them but I haven't actually seen any. Though I guess if I'm looking for something to watch I now know to choose.
BTW this is also the first time Citizen Kane hasn't won since 1962.

I've never seen any of those either, but I've been wanting to see Space Odyssey ever since they parodied it so much on Futurama. I just can't find it anywhere.

Re: The greatest films of all time
You guys make me feel uncultured now. Though it's not too surprising as I'm not actually a big movie fan. They take so long. Prefer series where you can stop every 20 minutes if you've had enough.

Re: The greatest films of all time
i cant stand modern makes of comic book films.... though i would never deny any one the right to enjoy them... just dont ask me to watch it with you.... a good film is like Requiem for a Dream... the film has purpose and leaves you with a sense of wonder afterwards. I will always rate I am Legend highly purely because it left my father feeling uneasy about Humanity, something that is extremly difficult to do...
that being said I do like the first batman films.... not these ones with Bale (though he's dreamy) I like the originals because they never took themselves to seriously.... like the Bond films

Re: The greatest films of all time
I've seen 2001: A Space Odyssey and I really don't see what the big deal is, I mean the special effects were great for the time, really good, but the story line is... well sort of predictable at first, but then the end is just... What the hell? I get it's supposed to be all abstract and all, but it's stupid.
though I guess if you analyze all the little things you realize its clever and all, but that's not the point of a movie, you shouldn't have to study papers on it beforehand to be able to enjoy it.
if you want to do something abstract then have it make some sort of sense, and don't just put it at the end of a otherwise normal movie. and at least be more creative than a baby looking at earth. I was seriously disappointed when I did finally watch it.
Other than that I haven't watched any others on the list, heard of a few, never seen them.

Re: The greatest films of all time
I find it sad that we still have Batman movies. The character came out in 1940, if I remember correctly. Let's see something new and original now.

Re: The greatest films of all time
Batman is one of DC's top sellers. In the comic world he is iconic. The name alone will draw a lot of people in, whereas this may not be the case for a new, untested character, or one of the lesser ones. Will a Robin movie do as well as a Batman one? Does it carry the same name recognition?
In any case, there are only so many believable or unique themes you can choose. Any other non-superpowered character may quickly become just another Batman, or gravitate in that direction.
In any case, the ending of the movie made it clear that they cannot continue the movie franchise. It may be possible to reboot the movies, but it will have to be a completely different script, or set much earlier than the last one. Though if they want to I suppose they can come up with something.

I love that movie! Will Smith's acting is absolutely brilliant, but I just can't bring myself to watch it for a third time. There's a certain scene that just breaks my heart every time. I'm not going to post any spoilers, but I think most people who've seen it will know immediately what scene I'm talking about.Punk-Fox-Dot-Com wrote: I will always rate I am Legend highly purely because it left my father feeling uneasy about Humanity, something that is extremly difficult to do...

Re: The greatest films of all time
I'm all for the Batman movies personally, yes the idea is old but who the Batman is has changed constantly throughout time, if you look at the original batman comics and the relatively newer ones, they are completely different.
Also DC took a different approach with Batman, in the comics, instead of Batman staying the same age inexplicably, he and the other characters do age and die, hence Batman's "Death" in the last movie.
Oh and it has been strongly hinted there may very well be another Batman movie, or possibly a whole other series of movies.

Re: The greatest films of all time
I'm sorry Brisby but there is no way's Battle L.A was the greatest film of all time. It was clichéd at best and the story left little to actually remember it by.
There are so many films that could be on that list,
Meet Joe Black
Trainspotting
Schindlers List
The Shining
I could go on.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Rock Star
Big Hero 6
Casablanca

It was good, but half of the movie was the guy floating around in space for 10 minutes with classical music playing...
or a bunch of monkeys standing around a black pillar with classical music playing...
Or a woman walking around with a tray, and classical music playing...
Or him falling through space for 10 minutes and all kinds of different color lights passing over him, with classical music playing...
And in all of those, I think it was one song by Tchaikovsky... Nutcracker suite if I remember correctly...
(nope... Something by Straus... Don't know his work...)
And what the heck was up with that ending?

Re: The greatest films of all time
The ending set you up for 2010.
Remember they are based on books, both of which are brilliant to read.
Also what I liked about both those films is due to their slow pace etc. you really get the feel of space. things don't happen fast in space. even explosions are limited and self contained.
For them to achieve that sort of futuristic feel and setting way back in 1968, is tremendous, and it took them a further fourteen years to complete the sequel.

Re: The greatest films of all time
Having studied the history of the time, and seen other films around that genre, Godfather is probably one of the best mafia based films you'll ever see. Also the amount of artistry taken to portray the film and it's characters in the differing lights and views makes me really want to get into film (rewatched it a few weeks ago, hid for horse head scene (still freaks me out), and the score was tasteful and on point.
Also, do yourself a favour and read the book. It's pretty cool.
(fun fact. the reason the horse head scene freak me out is because it's a real horses head. The horse in question had just been slaughtered for dog meat and they packed the head on ice and shipped it over to the film set. blood fake, horse head... legit.)
But each to his own.
