Nice school, the only movies anyone in my school likes are the ones that are advertised as being awesome, easily influenced bunch...

I heard that Star Wars had more promotional products and franchising than any other movie from its time.
They advertise the shit out of Star Wars.
When Phantom Menace came out it was TV ads, Posters, Coke, fast food, this and that all promoting the firkin movie.
"Win a Star Wars holiday!" Really.
Companies use the brand to promote themselves... for a price.
And Lukas gets free advertising with it aswell.
Star Wars does not need to advertise itself as awesome.
Other companies do it for them.
But with that said.
I am not a Star Wars fan.
I kind of grew out of it.

I used to be completely addicted to Star Wars, now only severely nostalgic for the good old days.
As for the merchandising, I recently saw an ad online (probably was a joke ad but still) advertising Star Wars Condoms with comedic slogans, i'll try troll through my history to find the pics sometime soon but some of the more memorable slogans included:
"Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?"
"Intensify the forward firepower!"
"That's no moon!"
and of course....
"Use the force.."
