So at work we collect stats and also reference from websites. Found this pretty neat list of popular OS.
I am keen to see what anyone thinks of it.

Note that Mac sits just under WinXP which is now the talk. Collegues are butting heads in the office over this :lol:

Well I believe many old places like Cern and the likes are still using Win XP in their mainframes because the software for their colliders have been written specifically for it...

This might be why...
It does sound a bit too good to be true though...

Yeah that's a good reason in almost all cases.
You'll probably even find a majority of the pos systems in retail and other service companies still stick to XP.

Why do we see so many old systems running old OS out there?

Well, I am a coder for a living and I can give you the TL;DR version or I can give you the summarized version:

Technology moves at a pace where OS change all the time. However, there's that niche market of bespoke and extremely technical / expensive hardware that is designed to last, and because of the way its made, it is written to use whatever OS is available at the time. Those products are generally mature and do not change, nor is there boat-loads of money to buy new ones.

Niche market examples:
* Embedded tools and debuggers for embedded stuff
* Industrial machinery and plant

Point-of-sale run DOS because its lightweight and they use embedded PC boards which are cheaper. This will change though, with the proliferation of (insert-name-here)-Pi boards.
At work we use Windows XP virtual machines because of our hardware, being designed to run Windows CE 6.0. The development tools do not run outside of Windows XP (we have had limited success in getting Visual Studio 2005 to run on Windows 7 or above). We cannot upgrade the Visual Studio because it doesn't support the hardware (hardware is discontinued, but very expensive and we rather fix than replace)

As a programmer myself, I have a hard time imagining being asked to work on old machines... I'd make the case that my working on older machines costs the company more in terms of my reduced productivity than the cost of buying a new machine outright.

(This isn't to say that you or your company are doing anything wrong, this is just my experience with my career =P)
