Interesting there should be some action in this thread ...
I recently found a very nice 3D engine (prebuilt, and programmable in C#, and free - with restrictions)
It's called Unity ( http://unity3d.com/ ), it's really quite awesome
I want to start at least getting some basic ideas down and concepts, but with unity the code will be easier to write and stuff :3
