Well its an interesting little device. I don't have one but I'd tinker with one a little before getting bored. I think an engineering friend of mine might have better use. I'd just really use it to create perfect random data input. program languages only gives sudo random variables so that's the only use I could use it for sadly

I glanced at the Wikipedia pages but I still don't know what it actually does.

http://www.arduino.cc/

The Arduino is a prototyping platform, or a little programmable device (microcontroller). You get sensors to give you certain inputs (e.g. time of day, whether it's raining, etc.), and set a series of responses to give out, or commands to other devices. In essence a PIC that is much easier to use and integrate. Want to build a device that waters your garden? Or opens your curtains at the press of a button? Your own home-made alarm system? Movable furry ears and tails and jaws? You can build all this with an Arduino with the necessary sensors and devices to actually perform the functions.

Personally I prefer the Raspberry Pi, although it's not quite the same as the Arduino.

The Pi is a fixed-format computer (always the same board layout), while the Arduino can be used in any configuration you wish to place it. The Arduino can work with virtually any electrical/electronic component, while the Pi is limited to mostly USB devices only. However, the Pi is a full computer, while the Arduino is a microcontroller. You can boot a OS on the Pi and use all the tools built into it.

The Arduino Due will change this, as it is reportedly very close to the Pi.

Hiya!
Here is my current Arduino Project...
Arduino Powered RC Robot...
Arduino Powered RC Robot...
Arduino Powered RC Robot 2
Arduino Powered RC Robot 2
Arduino Powered RC Robot 3
Arduino Powered RC Robot 3
Arduino Powered RC Robot 4
Arduino Powered RC Robot 4
It is a RC car...
Belive it or not, it is pretty hard to build, If I had sonic sensors, it would have been easier to build an autonomous car...
The reason is because the transmitter works on PPM rather than PWM...
Thus it takes quite a bit of code to change to a usable data....
CODE

After finding an Arduino supplier in SA It was easy...
I am using an MotoMama(I Know, Stupid name...) H-Bridge and an E_sky 4 channel transmitter and reciever...
Arduino Powered RC Robot and Transmitter
Arduino Powered RC Robot and Transmitter
How many of you are programmers?
How many of you encountered a problem where the second to last IF statement gets ignored??
Somehow this code does.....
now it can only move foreword, and backwords...
The sideways "If" statement gets completely ignored...
I didn't write it, I only repurposed it...
He made it...

It is powered by one (Or two) Li-Poly Battery's.
Thow they seem quite bloated, is that normal(0_o)?
anyway, they didn't explode yet, so they'r safe...ish for now...

Think anyone can help me with my coding issue??

If I finally get my 3d printer up and running I can print you a chassis.
I am just saving for it and should have it in the next 2-3 months...yeah this holiday was expensive :(

That sounds pretty cool! Are you building it yourself, or buying a new one? I saw a few DIY's in Instuctables on DIY 3-D printers....
If you get it, What would you charge me on making some parts for an anamatronic tail?
Where do you get the powder?
Let me know when it arrives!
 there is actually an supplier in SA!

Got a Uno aswell, but had a STM32 Eval Discovery board long before I got the arduino, and got use to it, the 32bit Cortex M3 is superb and once you get use it, its extremely powerful :)

Theres been people who ported a Nes emulator to it, and used the IO for a screen and controller ,its really robust.

Allso playd with some pic18f4550/5550 with native usb at one stage there lots of fun, and you can build a LVP programmer for it, for next to nothing.

Wow, Thats some powerfull bord!
Although, the arduino is better for beginners... Much simpler code...
lcd Initialization can be done in a few lines of code, There is "Shields" for everything, like the MotoMama motor shield, or the X-Bee WiFi, or GPS Shield...

You can call it Splootch!

Also no I wanted to try and build it myself but getting the printer parts from the Fablab was to much of a hassle. So I am getting the PrintRbot Plus kit.

Just a quick heads up for those furs interested in trying to play with ARM Cortex-M4, TI is about to launch there new Stellaris LaunchPad Eval board, and are now taking pre-orders at a discounted rate to increase sales, so the whole Eval board will only cost you $5 , and that is including actual shipping to your door :) ,thats cheaper than the shipping cost on a arduino...

Buy it here: https://estore.ti.com/Stellaris-LaunchPad.aspx
Specs and info: http://www.ti.com/tool/ek-lm4f120xl

PS. I like your stat...
PPS. There is a store that deals in Arduino in Pretoria, Microshop... I got my USB Host shield, Bluetooth shield, and Motorshield from them, propably a little cheaper to order online thow, but it helps if ou only have a savings account....

An Arduino has an voltage regulator onboard, so you can apply anny voltage from 6-17v to the vin, or the power socket, you can get/build an batterypack to use batterys on it....
sensors:
I see you have a thermistor, that is a pretty cool sensor, thow the coding is a little hard....
you have a flex sensor, and an FSR(Force Sesnsitive Resistor) that and a little imagination, you can do whatever you want!

check out Instructables
they have countless toutorials and instructions.
Matriek is just getting in my way.... currently....

Edit:
Here is a few links...
