Half Life 3's [Death] Confirmed

This was released by the lead writer:
MarcLaidlaw-Epistle3

I can't exactly say that I'm surprised. Still, this sounded like a pretty awesome storyline; it's a shame that it'll never be more than what it is here.

It could also be a kick in the arse to Valve, prompting them to resume production?

Personally I'd be more disappointed to not see a 3rd instalment to Portal or Darksiders, and I'm still salty about there never having been a Jazz Jackrabbit 3.

Honestly, Valve can't seem to do a damn thing right these days.

They hyped up Steam OS and Steam Machines so much, and they both died such a sad death that the internet never even took notice.

I did a little more digging.

Although Marc Laidlaw did indeed write this, he is no longer the series scriptwriter. He departed from Valve in January 2016, and is therefore no longer in any official capacity. It's possible this is how envisioned Half Life 2: Episode 3, and what he would have wanted it to be. Furthermore, in the article to which Lee linked, Marc apparently tweeted and implicitly referred to the writing as a "fanfic".

What this means remains to be seen, but I wouldn't consider it an official confirmation of the end of Half Life.

Yes, I am aware of all of that.

AFAIK, he and a lot of other people left Valve because they no longer were a game development studio. Even in 2016, he was likely aware that the game was nothing more than vaporware.

I doubt that he would have released this letter otherwise.

HL3 will happen when valve comes up with some game changing technology. It's kind of the point of the franchise.

And when last was that?

Granted, both of the main HL games were indeed revolutionary, but Valve hasn't done anything interesting within the last decade (that actually panned out, that is).
