Steam family sharing
Not something new, but a feature of steam that is very useful but not very advertised: Steam family sharing
Basically, what it does is, it lets you enable up to 5 people to use your Steam library when you're not using it. This means any game you own, except games that need a code or something in the game itself.
It does have limitations. While you're playing a game from your library, noone else can. But, if you're shared with someone, and they're shared with you, you can play games from each others libraries at the same time
Another thing to note: if two or more people are sharing games with you, and they have the same game that you don't, you'll only be able to play it from one of their libraries. Won't even see it from the other person. I think it depends on who shared first. So let the less active person share last
So, how to share. You need to log into your account on the other persons computer. If you're not at their computer, and don't trust them with your password, use teamviewer
In steam, go to settings, then family, and enable family sharing. Be sure to click "authorise this computer" and tick the name of the account you're sharing with. Log back into their account and you should see your games in their library
You will have to do this for every new computer, sadly. But it's a really cool way to play your friends games for free

Except that only one person can play the game at a time.

Yes, it is limited. But it's still really cool and not a lot of people know about it

Really?
I didn't know that it was that restrictive.

Re: Steam family sharing
I tried it once with a friend. Idea is cool but a pain in practice.
It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, especially if you live near him.

You act like it's some injustice. I find it a crime that it exists at all... I mean, it enables people to play games they haven't played for, for free. Why are you so negative about it?Sev wrote:Really?

Re: Steam family sharing
You have completely misrepresented what I said.
And you are misusing it. It's supposed to allow family members to share a single account, it's not supposed to allow your friends to leach games off of you.

Re: Steam family sharing
If you use it for sharing single player games, who cares whether or not you can play simultaneously?

Re: Steam family sharing
Because if both parties want to play the same game at the same time...
Re: Steam family sharing
That's just like old times then, when you only have one CD and have to take turns.

Re: Steam family sharing
Didn't always need CD, could install whole game to PC and just run it like that. Or sometimes, start up and then remove the CD.

I would exploit that to its maximum potential at LANs.Rakuen Growlithe wrote:Or sometimes, start up and then remove the CD.
