Game Recommendations

Post by Faanvolla »

What are some games you would recommend people check out?
Could be a useful list for people only just getting into a certain platform, or something to check through during sale times.
If someone else mentioned a game, don't worry about mentioning it again.
This isn't really a thread for debating a specific game, though, that'll make it more confusing to quickly have a look at.
Also don't just buy something because it was mentioned and then be angry if you don't like it. Do some of your own research as well.

Write only the name, add the platforms its on, give the genre, mention good DLC/mods, give a quick summary if you want, do whatever.

All these are PC, but some might be on consoles too:
Building games Open World
  • Skyrim, Steam Link
If you play as a Khajiit, I recommend the Khajiit-speak mod
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Steam Link
I never played any of the Batman Arkham games this one's combat is based off of, so if you're bored of/don't like that combat style, it might not be for you.
  • Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain, Steam Link
Of all the games I played in 2015 I enjoyed this one the most. The gameplay is fantastic imo, but if you don't like OTT/odd stories that might make no sense, maybe skip this.

If anyone has ever wanted to get into Total War, the latest entry (Warhammer) makes a good starting point. As long as you make peace with the fact that occasionally frustrating things that you can do nothing about happen, it's a fun and challenging experience.

Also, ignore the what the game says: the Dwarfs have the toughest, not the easiest starting position. I got into a war of do or die with another of the main factions in less than 10 turns.

I'm a fan of roguelikes xP can recommend a bunch

FTL: space roguelite
Enter the gungeon: quite possibly the best twin stick shooter roguelite. My favourite, anyway
The binding of isaac: probably the first twin stick roguelite. Has much content after many dlc's
Spelunky: platformer roguelite
Crypt of the necrodancer: rhythm roguelite

Ark: Survival Evolved!

I clocked over seven hundred hours of it in two months, and have many stories of murder, torture, and depravity to share!

I regret nothing. I have the conk-shell, and I will be heard!
Hahaha!

That would be obvious from the many reviews for it.

Warcraft III (Reign of Chaos, and the Frozen Throne)
Civilization V
Endless Legend

Puzzle Games:
For those who enjoy wracking their brains with logical, deduction, mathematical and/or spatial analysis and problem-solving.

Professor Layton series (All-time favourite game series of mine)
Portal, 1 and 2

(All the games mentioned above, except the Professor Layton and Ace Attorney series, are available on PC. The Professor Layton and Ace Attorney series are on Nintendo DS, but can be played on PC using emulator software.)

I would recommend Fallout New Vegas and the rest of the assassins creed series excluding rogue (in my oppion it is the worst of the series).
PS are apps included or are you just referring to consol / PC games.

Eh, phone games are games too, don't see why not.
  • Downwell, iOS, Android, Steam
Better with physical input rather than touch screen.
  • BADLAND, iOS, Android, Steam
There's a sequel, found it more frustrating challenging.
  • INKS, iOS
Pinball but with a different goal. I don't like the last two sections of it though.
  • You Must Build A Boat iOS, Android, Steam
    Match 3 with progression

I enjoyed the gameplay but I found the actual storyline was short and not as well done as it could of been. Also I found it very easy, so it didn't really provide me with a challenge and that's way I disliked it.

Again my oppinion

Mobile games! Because why not?

Tower defense: Bloons tower defence 4... Not free, but fun

Roguelike: pixel dungeon. Free + ad free. I donated money to them even though you gain nothing by doing so. That's how much I liked it. Also has a few "mods", for example Shattered Pixel Dungeon... Basically just extra content

Godville... Not much of a game. Basically a text based thing where you create a hero. You are the heroes god. The hero is an ignorant drunk who ignores much of what you tell him. I like the humour. Btw, as you progress, you get more to do. After your hero builds a temple for you (which took me over a year) you can send him into dungeons and stuff.

Rebuild 3: strategy type game, where you rebuild and recapture a city infested with zombies. I played rebuild 1 and 2 on Armorgames.com waay back. I recommend you play those first. Unlike the third, it's free. Got it on a humble bundle, dono how much it costs

I won't really make a comprehensive list, but I will suggest one game.
One game which I have been following for years. And it is nearing completion.
I've probably clocked more than 400 hours on this game.

Check it out.

Shadow of the Colossus!
It's quite an old open world game and only available on PS2 & PS3. Pretty good graphics for the time it was made in though!
The gameplay may seem quite hollow, but once you've gotten into the game and start looking into its theories, prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster.
Has anyone else played SOTC?

SUPERFIGHT on Steam

"SUPERFIGHT is a hilarious card game based on fights between characters with superpowers and super problems. Players create ridiculous fighters from the cards they draw, argue with one another over who would win in a fight, then the audience decides the winner! The digital version of SUPERFIGHT features cutting-edge Twitch integration and bring players an unparalleled community experience."

Works best with a Cam and Mic, but really fun to play with friends

You merely have to change your Point of View slightly.. and that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.. I doubt that anything could argue its existence more eloquently.." - Code Geass (Lelouch vi Britannia)

hoo boy
pls not that most of these games can deal with intense themes so don't play if you're not mature enough or whatever.
all of them can be found on steam or online so this list is exclusively for pc's but due to the software they're made with they can pretty much run on anything (most of them that is)

Artsy games
hylics
Yume Nikki
.flow
Yume2ikki
the Lisa series (Lisa the joyful etc)

just as a side note i'd also recommend nier automata I was hesitant going in despite loving the directors previous work but it was masterful in it's presentation sound and story to some degree

What Remains of Edith Finch.

I'm just going to tell you that this game is by far the best game I have ever played, and will ever play. No, it isn't some high action fantasy/sci-fi/adventure. It is literally just a story about a woman returning home to reminisce over her dysfunctional family. And it is gorgeous. The story is amazing. The way the creators made each 'scene' be portrayed is art in and of itself. It isn't very long, I'd say about 2-3 hours max, but what you feel and experience is worth all of it.

It is a very sad game though, so be prepared for feels aplenty. And some scenes might make you cringe a little.

I'd say after playing it I remember just sitting there and feeling a mix of emotions I couldn't place. That feeling you get after watching an exceptional movie or reading a great book (erhem), you just can't do/think about anything else. You just have to take the time to let all of it set in.

I'd recommend this to everyone. And I doubt there'd be a single person who would dislike it for what it is.

Gorogoa.

Another masterpiece I came across recently. It is one of the most unique, and breathtaking games I've ever seen. The art is amazing. The sound track. Everything. Honestly, nothing I say will give it justice. Just play the game for yourself.

It's a relatively short puzzle adventure game, with no dialogue. Everything is conveyed through picture. But as you go through all of it you just can't help but get drawn in deeper and deeper. I'd recommended it to everyone. The puzzle's themselves aren't that difficult, so you don't need to be a genius to finish it, but when you do, I can bet you'll be sitting there in awe for hours to come. It's that good.

Play it.
