Steam store user ZAR

So, the steam store now accepts Rands (Or whatever's the correct way of saying that)... I find it quite interesting

When I first heard they were gonna do it, I feared we'd have to start paying much higher prices. These fears were based off the fact that, that's exactly what the South-African playstation store was like... Selling a $40 game for R600, back when the a Dollar was worth about R8. Don't know how it's like these days, but back then, I made an American and a British account, just to save money

Now, it seems the reverse is true on the Steam store. Considering that the current rand-dollar is R14,22 for a dollar, these are the prices of some games in dollar and rand

Rocket league: $20 -> R220 (save R64,40)
Fallout 4: $60 -> R800 (save R53,20)
Undertale: $10 -> R109 (save R33,20)
Crypt of the necrodancer: $15 -> R159 (save R53,30)
Turbo pug: $0,59 -> R7,20 (save R1,19) (Just wanted to see the effect on a cheap game and turbo pug was one of the first ones on the store xD)

So, yeah. All and all, it looks pretty good. Seems you save more on some games than on others, but overall, this does look pretty good. If the rand starts doing better again, we can always shop on g2a and such. So... This more or less made my day. Slightly cheaper games for South-Africa

It still works out cheaper to buy FO4 from Take a Lot.

Thank you for this, jacojerb. I was also under the initial impression that games would be more expensive, based on articles I had read about it.

It's such a relief to see that steam has been merciful towards us!

It also saves a few rand extra, because by purchasing off steam, we are no longer forced to use the currency converter services provided by our banks.

The rand exchange is ridiculous at the moment though. I remember buying games on steam in 2011, when the exchange rate was R 6.62 per dollar.
Hahaha! :lol:

I've read some things from other people, and there's still a possibility that it'll get more expensive due to vat. It might not happen, game developers or valve can either raise the price so that we handle the vat, or keep the price and worry about that cost themselves...

Still. That's 14%. Most of the savings is over 20%, so if we get stuck paying the vat, we'll still be better off than how we were before... On most games, at least

A few of Bethesda's games, I saw. A bunch others too

Apparently it shouldn't stay like that for long, just deciding on prices, or something... Should be temporary

For those wondering, we’ve compiled a list of some of the games currently unavailable for purchase on Steam locally:

Tales of Symphonia

Full Bore

The Evil Within

Kentucky Route Zero

Gang Beasts

Desktop Dungeons

Samurai Gunn

Project Zomboid

The Standley Parable

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Fallout 3

Fallout: New Vegas

Tiny Barbarian DX

Ikaruga

Final Fantasy III

Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe

Planetary Annihilation

7 Days to Die

Card Hunter

JumpJet Rex

Vagante

Mystik Belle

Slain!

A Pixel Story

Grey Goo

Sproggiwood

Puzzle Quest 2

ARK: Survival Evolved

Starbound

Don Bradman Cricket 14

We can guarantee the list is quite a lot larger than that, and it’s more than likely that any franchises that contain the games mentioned above will be affected entirely.

Hey guys, watch out if some stores pull stuff like this:

Earlier this morning, I found Jedi Knight 2, Jedi outcast for R969

Not kidding.

So perhaps if we find stores WAY overpricing games, we make a note of it. I guess however, they got with the program, cause it's now R109, much more accessible, but still, keep an eye out and let people know

Also, added to list unavailable right now: Samurai warriors 4-2, and Rivals of Aether
