Since we talking about WOW I will say that it sounds like a total rip off. If they want you to pay a subscription to play then I think the game and upgrades should be free. It seems ridiculous to make people pay for the game and then pay every time they want to play it.

They are, the only thing you HAVE to pay for are the officially expansion. Patches in WoW aren't just bug fixes. They add new instances(dungeons), raids(uber dungeons), gear, "meta" game things like the looking for dungeon tool and hell the last patch redid all of the old world.

500ms sounds nuts, but I assure you their netcode is great. They game is playable EASILY up to 1200ms. Hell even BF2's net code is so good that, as an FPS, you can play with 200+ ms on overseas servers with no lag. League of Legends is a DotA-esque game and I play on the US servers with no lag.

The monthly sub model is a very western billing mechanic and I would love a 'pay as you play scheme" Asain counties tend to do this.

For me <100ms for FPS
<400ms for RPG
<800ms for RTS

500ms is fine if you just want to PVE, and if PVE is all you want out the game that's fine.
But you need about 100ms for PVP. Even @ 200 ms you can start to feel it, and it can make all the difference between winning and losing.
I've tried playing at all those different latencies I know...

And as Rakuen says, the starting package + subscription is quite steep unless you intend on playing it a lot to try and get all your money's worth out of it.

-And finally a oldish game, from 2006ish, Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, never got around to playing it after the demo, and I just had to get a part of this steam-punk filled goodness.
