Never Never (A bit light though but still pretty awesome)

I'm looking forward to hearing a good quality version of Love and Meth though.

Edit: Anyhow, enough of my Korny music taste. There must be more metal furs out there?

Accretion’s Korn – The Paradigm Shift review.

OK so this release had a bad start from the public’s perspective in the initial announcement. I have to do this as I’m listening through this thing now and understand many of the stuff pointed out.

So what happened to KoRn? Nothing really, the new album includes Jonathan, Fieldy, Munky and Brain Head as the original founders of the band, all back and jamming alongside Ray Luzier’s awesome drumming skills. This is the first album since the return of Head.

The album is a good addition to their collection as it’s much heavier in sound than Remember Who You Are in 2009. It feels like going back to 1999 again with more mature lyrics that takes listening too before uncovering the songs meaning. As a band, KoRn never really got stuck on a specific sound apart from the drop tunings and Jonathan’s vocal style which actually did change a bit over time. Your voice is not gonna sound the same as you did 20 years ago. Thus each album was a tad experimental or even much so and had its own setting and style. The fans of the band knows KoRn for their ability to experiment with random things including bagpipes, Electronic sounds or acoustic recordings of common house hold objects. Since the start in 1994 they sounded like nothing anyone has done before and is still pretty original when looking at the nu-metal scene today. 7 String Drop tunings filled with a proper Bassist’s Slap style with a real disturbed vocalists just wouldn’t sound like Cannibal Corpse and all the others that do.

The Paradigm Shift

Pros:
Working with electronic producers such as Excision, Skrillex and Noisia during the previous album really enhanced the use of electronic sounds in this album. Like I said it’s all experimenting and they are turning heads in this sense.

Brain Head’s return definitely added back that missing guitar instances. Metal and Rock has one rule, the more guitars the better it sounds. This is a fact! During recording you’ll be surprised how many layers of guitars get tracked before everyone is happy. Each layer just boosts the epicness. With 2 different play styles combined it adds even more distortion thus sounding crunchier.

The vocals are deep and new age that will attract new young listeners to the band and maybe even those that were put off by the explicit lyrics or horribly vivid songs like Daddy before.

There are some great tracks that I can listen to over and over again. It sounds unique just like KoRn is supposed to sound.

Cons:
Musically it’s nothing new from what they already did.

The vocals are not explicit or as heavy as normally. There is a lack of emotion compared to older albums. Personally I blame the cleaner lyrics on Head. I have this feeling that he kind of guided the album with his new found way of life in mind. Path of Totality was explicit and it was just released the other day.

Overproduction destroyed some riff sounds into smooth pieces of cheese that needed to sound like asphalt rather than cheese. Jonathan also disappears in the sound here and there.

No Clicks on the bass solos from Fieldy. A Little here and there but it’s just overwhelmed with everything else.

With this said I guess it’s good to say that KoRn isn’t going away soon. I believe it’s a band and style that people may understand a bit more if they lived during our generation, 25 to 35 I guess. Getting young crowds to flock to their shows is what they are after so I would say if you’re not happy with the way the sound is evolving. You are getting old! And still have a huge collection of previous albums to listen to so what’s the fuss all about in the first place?

Edit: My Fav song on the album so far: Spike In My Veins

I really have to agree. Everything you said is 100%
I really would have liked something a little heavier after the path of totality and more toward songs like Hold on, all in all, I'm not disappointed thou.
Favorite song has to be Pray for me. The drumming is superb
least liked song is probably punishment time. It's probably the song with the most over production.
I've only listened to it once at work so opinions might change on my ride home. ( my car has pimping sound yo )

There are more Metal Furs out there, after all, Metal is the single genre with the highest votes in the old music poll ( the poll wasn't very well supported ) but I guess it was while the site was on lock down. Now with more Furs and Scalies starting to join we can probably expect more lively discussions.

The forums have been slow lately.

I suppose I should contribute. I generally prefer power metal, though I listen to all sorts of things. My favourite bands would probably be Cradle of Filth and Sonata Arctica (I have one of their shirts). I haven't got any new stuff in a while though. And I went to see Metallica live when they were here earlier in the year.

Listening my way through the new Nine Inch Nails. Hesitation marks. It's pretty good. Not much new from Trent, but still fun to listen to
