TUKS(UP) and other university strikes have become violent.
Re: TUKS(UP) and other university strikes have become violen
My word, now Pukke has had a building burned down, and a student has supposedly been shot dead.

I don't see how "lol" is an appropriate response to that.

What a hypocrite... But at least something is being done.

I read the whole thing, but I don't how this makes him a hypocrite. Then again, I have never even heard of this guy before.

What an IDIOT.
Joke or not, that's not the kind of statement that an official should ever make under these circumstances.

Excellent security measures have been enforced at TUKS so far, which I think will help a lot.
The part that we are searched for weapons just before we go into the library is a tad intense, but improvement nonetheless.

(I fear I may be breaking a rule by posting in such an old thread... yet when I scanned through the forum guidelines, I (myself) could not find any. I apologize in advance to the staff if I am breaking conduct.)
I was one of the engineering students in the lecture hall that was raided by the EFF on that Thursday afternoon. We were having a calculus tutorial. Needless to say, there was much commotion: the EFF were singing, dancing, throwing around the furniture, and writing profanity on the blackboard (mostly directed towards the Afrikaans language).
I was on my nerves, but did not feel very threatened. I turned to the English student to my left, and said "let them have their fun; if you do not harm them, they will not harm you."
I am glad to see that, since then, Tuks has become safer. However, I would not dismiss the possibility of there being protests in the future: the agreement reached by all the parties may not be as radical as the EFF wishes it to be.

Seriously though, don't stress. This isn't a certain other South African forum that likes to spew "news" or the other one that is the #1 pawn shop

Ahem *taps finger against the table* Off-topic ... off-topic ... Let's try to get it back on track, please?
It was very interesting to hear of someone directly affected though. Most other uni furs stayed away from the protests, but it seems you didn't have a chance to.

Re: TUKS(UP) and other university strikes have become violen
Yeah, gonna admit that during my time at Varsity, (2005, yes they were protesting back then too), I managed to avoid those demonstrators, thanks to their loud voices carrying far distances. Once was locked in the library as it was put into shut down. Fun times.
But to have been in a class they disrupted? I never had that experience, so to hear about it from someone who was in one is quite the different viewpoint.

Re: TUKS(UP) and other university strikes have become violen
There were protests back in 2005? I can believe that, however I believe the political landscape of South Africa has shifted immensely since then - it has become far more precarious (I need not mention facts proving this contention, lest I evoke a heated political debate.)
Simply put, there are more forces at work stirring up anger among the demographic majority now than ever before since 1994. This stress is most easily seen in universities.
It was a harrowing experience to be in there, but not as scary as some may think.
The university security guards first attempted to block the entrances and prevent the EFF protestors (with a small amount of political allies from other youth and progressive groups) from gaining entry. The protestors simply used the unguarded fire escape, while subjecting the security guards to accusations that they were "defending ... supremacy". Once the protesters were in, they began pouring in and just making a lot of commotion. The role of the security guards, unarmed and outnumbered at about three-to-one, was reduced merely to forming a disjointed wall between disgruntled students and the protesters in an attempt to prevent close-quarter fights from emerging. Fortunately, none did.
In all honesty, I believe the increase in radicalism in the political landscape is partly to blame. If you harp on the insecurities of a majority long enough and instill within some of them through propaganda a will to act on such insecurities, you have a recipe either for a just revolution, or a horrific disaster.
