Addiction
Re: Addiction
Rick at 1:14.
It makes a lot of sense that addiction (to anything) may be a substitute for a broken or lack of social life. And by "social life" I don't mean party culture or being popular, I mean daily physical interaction with other human beings.

Re: Addiction
I dunno. I'm sure social connections are an important part of the story but to my knowledge there is plenty of evidence supporting chemical changes in the brain that cause addiction. Of course, that is limited to specific substances. There are many other things that people claim they are "addicted to" which are not physical addictions. So if you stop eating sweets or watching porn you don't go through the same sort of withdrawal as you do with certain drugs.

Re: Addiction
Actually you do, glucose was proven to be addictive. Similarly I would say the same thing could be true of the arousal hormones produced by watching porn.
Perhaps a non-chemical addiction (such as TV or Internet) is simply a placebo version of the real thing? I mean we all know how powerful placebos and the human mind can be. Or maybe we are simply addicted to the feeling of instant self-gratification.

I'm sure some people use drugs to escape the drudgery of physically having to interact with other human beings.Leeward wrote:Rick at 1:14.

Re: Addiction
Oh yes I'm sure many are in it only for purely hedonistic reasons, but then they aren't addicts, only habitual users.

Re: Addiction
I seem to have an incredibly addictive personality. Nor with substances, but with things. I seem to have a legitimate addition to spending money on bike stuff.

Re: Addiction
my mother used to work as a councilor for drug addicts back in the 90's. bearing in mind advances have been made since then back in the day it was almost purely believed that addicts became addicted in order to replace something they felt they couldn't gt otherwise. that wasn't always global opinion, but rather the way it was seen in south Africa. so the rehabilitation process for much of the 80's and 90's was to find healthier "addictions". such as pets, walking or work.
I am addicted to making people smile. I do this to boost myself. it chemically makes me happy.
my friend was addicted to tik. she dint take it to feel better or keep going longer through the day. she took it because some said try it and it simply became habit. she was still classed as addicted at Tara because she stole from the stables to get more drugs, but she wasn't addicted to the drugs as the effects had stopped happening months before. she was addicted to the act of using. that's not chemical, its habitual but it doesn't mean u aren't an addict. they are one and the same.

Re: Addiction
Do any of you furs here know of a friend or relative who has, or still does, use 'addictive' drugs recreationally without any dependencies?

I do. A friend of mine used to vape weed regularly but recently quit (and by recently I mean a few months ago) because it was becoming too expensive and he wanted to focus on his thesis.Neon wrote:Do any of you furs here know of a friend or relative who has, or still does, use 'addictive' drugs recreationally without any dependencies?

Re: Addiction
He was using an aromatherapy vaporiser filled with dried buds, not cannabis oil. In fact we called him "weed nerd" or "weed snob" because he knew all the theory on the chemistry, optimal temperatures for THC extraction, minimal tar content, etc.

Yup, that's exactly it. His argument for it is that you get all the THC and none of the tar and ash.

I thought that vaping didn't create any tar or smoke.
Re: Addiction
Indeed it doesn't. That's kind of the whole point.

Re: Addiction
As far as I know, weed is not addictive anyway.

It's not physiologically addictive, I think that it might be psychologically addictive, though.

Re: Addiction
vaping is bad for you like hubbly is. it gets water vapour on your lungs, which is not quote as bad as tar and crap but still not good.
Im not sure on the addictiveness of weed, because I can tell you know a certain angel dragon who may or may not be a certain anubian jackal has had it several times and has never had a need or craving for it since, never felt any affects from it other than once hacking her lungs out, and will never do it again.

It happens with eliquid too if your atomizer coils in a vape box are too hot or burnt out.
Lol. Don't expect to feel anything from stuff that comes from a matchbox. There are brand names you know.RavenSong wrote:never felt any affects from it other than once hacking her lungs out, and will never do it again.

I know that. the stuff that may or may not have been used was some special crap and top of the line or whatever for the place we were in and it still didn't do nothing. trust me... all varieties have been tried.

Re: Addiction
I can genuinely say tonight that I have an addiction problem to alcohol.
I went into Tesco to buy dinner at 11.20pm after work. I am tired and I don't want to cook. I came out with a large bottle of Smirnoff Ice (quart) and a bottle of Apple Sours. this will satiate the hunger and put me to sleep so when I wake up tomorrow at 9 to go to work I don't feel like I haven't slept for days.
It works for me at the moment and is the path I would rather choose than food....

The occasional drink should be fine, it's when it becomes a habit and your brain treats it as the new normal that you should get worried.RavenSong wrote:It works for me at the moment and is the path I would rather choose than food....
