African Golden Wolves

#1

Post by Valerion »

There is an African species called Canis Aureus - Golden Jackals. They look exactly like Eurasian Golden Jackals, and have always been thought to be the same species (C. aureus). However, genetic testing have shown that the animal is actually not related to Golden Jackals, but is instead closer related to Dogs and Wolves. It has since been renamed to Canis Anthus or African Golden Wolves.

This is also the animal used as the head for Anubis in Egyptian mythology. Does this mean that Anubis should now be called a Wolf-headed god?

People have been saying for years now that Anubis was actually a wolf because jackals didn't exist in Egypt at the time.

Pimp Daddy Mistah Gold is the only golden thing around these parts. Imma slap a ho-wolf for hustlin muh turf.

In all seriousness something like this has a lot of repercussions in other sciences like the mentioned Egyptian Mythology. What else might need to be adjusted in this regard?

<_< also you can apply the scientific method to history... you don’t get people building trebuchets and making poop fired clay pots for nothing, these are experiments and they help people clarify how stuff was done back then.

but in regards to Anubis being a golden jackal or golden wolf... he looks more like a Xoloitzcuintle than a jackal to me man... <_< for statrers, he is black and his ears are not spaced like that of the golden wolf. as far as i know people only speculate that Anubis was based on a jackal and no actual reference were made to him being a jackal... likened to a jackal perhaps but never defined as such.

I love wolves - they are super snuggly.

Not as good as foxes, though. Those guys are miracles of nature.

In all seriousness, since wolves and "dog-wolves" are legal to keep in Arizona, I did some research on how suitable they are as pets. The basic answer: not very.

They never completely loose their fear/mistrust of humans, they retain their predator instincts, and they can absolutely destroy homes as a result of their insatiable curiosity. That, and they amount of exercise they need is just incredible.

I have a Facebook friend who's got a wolf now. I find I have to constantly bite my tongue.

She justifies it as "it's domesticated, it was born in captivity." Cats have been domesticated since the times of Egypt and they still revert to their natural instincts more often than not. Dogs, who have been so interbred to create monstrosities etc. and are so far from other canines I'm surprised they are considered fogs any more, STILL revert to their basic instincts when threatened etc. It takes more than a generation or too to "breed out" the "wild" from a species. Circus animals for example often came from parents bred in captivity from parents bred from captivity bred from parents captured from the wild (four generations). How many times did a lion lose it. Look at Tyke, the circus elephant who lost it in Hawaii in 1994. Lost it and wounded his trainer fatally, then went on a rampage through the streets and was eventually shot down.

Domestication of animals has aided human progression, and as a horse rider I am probably a bit hypocritical when I moan at people for wanting to domesticate a "wild" animal.

Or maybe I'm not.

Not entirely related, but it's not just dogs that can be inbred monstrosities. :P

The top thing is a Persian. Hairless sphynx cats are hypo-allergenic, yes, but they have a whole list of associated problems, including hypothermia and vulnerability to sunburn.

Since it's a cat's saliva that people are allergic to, would putting a coat on the cat defeat the point of getting a hairless cat? i.e. would they coat the coat with their saliva anyway?

Actually it isn't the salive people are allergic to. it's the dander (animal dandruff). hairless cats, bashkit curly horses and I think shar pei dogs (correct me here if I'm wrong) all produce significantly less dander, making them hypo-allergenic...

No, it's a protein in the saliva.

But that does raise an interesting point about one of the few advantages in baldness.

What causes dog allergies?

Causes. Dogs secrete proteins that end up in their dander (dead skin), saliva, and urine. An allergic reaction occurs when a sensitive person's immune system reacts abnormally to the usually harmless proteins. Different breeds produce different dander, so it's possible to be more allergic to some dogs than others.

Heh... we're both right :P

Raven, if you're quoting from somewhere off the forum it might be nice to indicate that some way and ideally include a link. Otherwise it's hard to tell what you're saying and what you're reporting someone else has said.

Cat allergies are twice as common as dog allergies. But contrary to what you might think, it's not the fur or hair that's the real problem. People with cat allergies are really allergic to proteins in the cat's saliva, urine, and dander (dried flakes of skin).
