How smart are furs?

Post by Rakuen Growlithe »

I saw a similar topic on yifffstar a while ago and I'm curious to see what the situation is like for South African furs (I think we're generally a smart bunch). Non-sa furs please just comment but don't vote. For me I'm currently studying at university, doing a BSc.

Heh, not that it means much ... I got a B.Sc (Chemistry and Informatics) in 1994 as well as a B.Sc.Hons (Informatics) in 1995 from RAU. Didn't finish my M.Sc., though.

Has it really been 13 years? Wow ... now I DO feel old.

I finished my M.Sc later last year, did Environmental Science, with extra credits in Environmental Management. Before that, I did a B.Sc, majoring in Zoology and Microbiology. I did them back to back with no breaks, straight out of school.

Mmm, I'm a number 2, though I dont see diploma as an option >..> I've got a diploma in Multimedia Technology from CPUT. Though I plan to further my studies next year when I sign up for the Btek extension of my course and then hopefully get employed at CPUT and earn my DTek.

Thats my current path of education. I enjoy learning and teaching others. :) I think its pointless for my knowledge to die along with me.

Cool. We seem to be a lot smarter than average so far.

I'd imagine a diploma is pretty similar to a degree so just count it as one. If there's a major difference I can always add the option or change the wording.

Yea, I'm thinking the same thing, though a diploma is far more 'hands-on' than a degree. (of course, depends on the subject, but in most cases this is true).

Well, I am currently studying for a degree and hoping to go onto the honours and masters for my course. I rather have a degree so that it makes me look a bit better on the CV. ;)

Cheers, Red. :D

i was on the way to a BSc IT degree in computer programming

after 4 years, failing calculas, and not making linear algebra, i decided to call it quits before i did something bad to myself (i had severe depression) and then moving back in with my parents (worse depression ... damn family) and then finally taking over my brother's flat and now buying it! (but i digress)

The reason i dropped out is because the professor (who is supoposed to know the course material) didn't know a thing, was teaching MY speciality (C#) to the students as though it was a decrepid clone of java, the lecturer didn't even bother to try and read some decent material about the language and find out that 90% of the stuff she was slamming the language for not supporting, the language DID infact support and did it better than most languages (C++ included) </rant>

So, yeah, other prof who knows little, but writes books about it declared me as her best student, and contacts me now and then to do tasks for her in the language she's written these books about, because she doesn't know how to do things ...

so yeah, i get stuck trying to parrot learn crap that's wrong, or go out into the world and find my nieche (that thing), which is C# programming, and i'm happy doing it alll day :D

</finishes rambling>

Studied at RAU, and did a few courses here and there.. got my A+ in 1998 (yes, my exams were largely on DOS =P ), and design and web development courses. demanded a refund on the one web development course as I ended up lecturing the class html for 2 days while the lecturer couldn't make it, when it was supposed to be a prerequisite to know html and basic javascript/css before enrolling *rolls eyes* otherwise 95% of what i do is self-taught

Ah it's not too tragic. At least you didn't make us look bad.

The best bit of being of being a fur is the IT support system. hehe, if I have a problem almost everyone can help me out.

That's funny how most furries are either in IT (or something related), or know a lot about more about IT. Suppose it makes sense tho..

If you're going on certifications, i've got 2 exams done for my MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer), in prep for going to an MCSD (The solution developer), i tried the security exam 3 times and couldn't make it, i guess i'm going to try something else to get that AD.

Going to be going to an MCITS (the technology specialist) either in Windows applicationd evelopment and or WPF development (Windows presentation development), since i love client side programming (just soo nice and no latency or internet in the way - say no to html and webdev! :P )

I have a degree in Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the PUKKE (NWU as of late), and i'm doing my Honours degree in Information Tech now... I will hopefully finish this year, hehe.

I have two years of Mechanical Engineering after my back too, until we started doing fluid dynamics - and my brained turned into mush. *giggles* That's when i swopped to another course, hehe...

I'm still at school, without any degree...
I will be eligible to take an IT technician exam after my school, still 2 years until then (other educational system here).

I think of studying on an University, but... It's a bit hopeless for me - so far it's highly unlikely for me to get them...

Not giving up on the idea, though. Maybe something will change.

Sadly I know that's true. I thought when I got to university I'd suddenly find a bunch of intelligent people but I've been sorely disappointed, even in second year.

If I remember right I considered CTI. They came to my school and then encouraged us to take their test. I decided not to when I found out pretty much everyone got a perfect mark for it and decided they were just saying that to encourage people.

I'm currently still in school, Matric year, and only 2 more terms and 2 more sets of exams until I'm free. After that, I intend on studying a BPharm (Pharmacy) at either NMMU (in PE), Rhodes University, or MWU (Potch, want.) Of course, that all depends heavily on my matric marks :P

I do apologise for this but...

I am studying Psychology, and i noticed your topic is: How smart are furs? Now, you're methods of finding out what level of education is acceptable.

But... this should not automatically imply intelligence. After all, what is intelligence? Is intelligence based on marks? Is it more? Can things that are not based on marks, such as creativity, be declared as part of intelligence.

Just remember: Einstein failed science in school, and his science teacher told his parents that he'd bring shame upon the family.

I do apologise for that again. Couldn't help it. Psych gets to you eventually.

That point was already brought up and acknowledged. But it's still true that the stupidest people don't get to university, in general. So if they are there then they are more likely than not above average in intelligence.

And I have found anything that suggests Einstein did failed at science. In fact the whole thing about him being bad at school is a myth. He quit school before finishing because he didn't like the teaching methods used. Although he did later finish school.

Basicaly I currently only have a few diplomas all computer related (mcse, cisco, citrix). Ultimatly I want to get my doctors in IT but im still a bit clueless as how to get that and a bit flooded with being a jack of all trades at work. Next year im starting with my 3rd job at the same company in 3years this time on the server team. This rapid primotions is however alianating me at work because I got first dibs on the last job and the next 1.

I got a few CIW certificates in web development thinking I would make easy money.
The plan was to get the qualifications get a nice job and then study part time bio-tech.

It did not work out the way I planed.

I have heard networking, CAD and Cisco is a better way to go but it is already to late for me.
