Afrikaans and French
Recently I've been on a spree of discovering that Afrikaans borrows way more from French than one would think.
For starters, it turns out that out word for mushroom, "sampioen" is directly lifted from the French "champignon." We did get "paddastoel" (toadstool) from Dutch, but chose to borrow another word from French.
Then I also learned that the Dutch word for envelope is "envelop." Which made me question where the Afrikaans "koevert" comes from. Turns it it's French again, from "couvert", which is a cognate for the English "cover" and "covert." So in this case Dutch already borrowed it's own French word for envelope, but then Afrikaans decided we'd prefer a different French word, actually.
Can anyone else think of any other examples?

Re: Afrikaans and French
Nope, my Afrikaans is terrible.

Also, it's fairly obvious that quite a few "Afrikaans" last names are actually French. You have the obvious ones like Du Toit, Du Plessis, Dumas, Le Roux, Cilliers, Du Preez.
But a few I didn't realise are French are Visagie (from visage, or "face") and Labuschagne... which I simply did not connect to French because of how it is pronounced in Afrikaans, lol.

Eey, congrats!
I just remembered there was a kid in my class in high school whose first name was Le Roux. Kind of odd, but in a cool way.
