It was labelled as "bee macro photography", so I assume it must be a bee.

I'm afraid the photographer was deceived by this little creature, because I'm fairly sure that's a wasp. Bees typically have black or dark brown faces with yellow fuzz with small mandibles, whereas the bald head with yellow facial markings and big mandibles here are typical of wasps. Also bees have black legs, wasps have yellow legs. Sorry, it's not the cute little nectar- and pollen-gathering do-gooder you thought it was. It's still good macro photography and a cool wallpaper though.

Oh, please, wasp, no.

The very sight of a wasp sends me into a blind panic. They are vicious, evil creatures, whose sting causes such unbelievable agony - and scarring - that they much surely be of Hades.

I can't decide if that is incredibly brave or extremely foolish. If something goes wrong, that is going to be one angry insect.

I think it's stupid but effective. After the first hit it's so disoriented it isn't really dangerous any more, and it's pretty hard to miss for someone who knows how to hit a flying squash ball. If it looks stupid but works, it ain't stupid.

I have never been stung by wasps and neither has my close family so far I know, I even get them flying into my room now and then and they go away after a while.

Seems like a lot of hate for the things :P

Being stung by a wasp is like having a hot nail driven into you. And then there's the fact that the wound became infected, which ended up leaving a really nice hole in my ankle. What absolute fun.

So, yes, I think that I am perfectly in my right to hate wasps.

I've also never been stung by one, and the place where I stay is overflowing with the things every summer. I only know two people they've stung and the one was actively attacking them whilst the other is always getting attacked by animals. Wasps are generally rather peaceful. Also, cuddly. How can people hate something cuddly?

How can you cuddle those things? I mean firstly they're tiny, but secondly they're all hardened carapace, mandibles, and stingers, with wings attached.

Exactly. Have you seen how Japanese wasps (actually a hornet) tear bees apart? Not cuddly at all.

I think it is common for Americans to call any flying yellow stinging insect a bee. So yeah, that photographer is probably mistaken.

I have never been stung by a wasp. I think that is why I am so afraid of them; I just don't know what to expect. If ones comes into my room or something, I can stay calm up to a point but it is only a matter of time before I crack and just 'nope' out of there. I have to just hope that it is gone by the time I come back.

Don't get me wrong, I think wasps are awesome. Maybe I should purposely get stung sometime just to get over my fear. :P

Since I own so many PC's, I use each one to celebrate a different "thing". For example, my Chronos and desktop are dedicated to motorcycles - the former, the F800/R1200 GS, the latter, the KTM 1190/990 Adventure. My two Dell laptops are dedicated to Sci-Fi (general and Mass Effect respectively), and my HP mobile workstation is dedicated to spectacular vistas.
