Some may know this and some may not, but I am getting a suit made by Luno Vulpes.

Head is done so far.

Complete suit. Now waiting on some plushies, then I'll have to find a way to import it. I looked at the import tariff chart, and boy this is gonna hurt ...

Right. So just got over my heart attack.

Fursuits have a 40% import duty, plus 14% VAT, because SA is protectionist when it comes to clothes. To protect the local industry, apparently.
Plushies, on the other paw, just have the 14% VAT applied.

Wow. Forty percent of a fursuit cost is quite substantial.

Can't it be marked as something other than clothing?
I doubt that customs would know what it even is.

Also, "local industry".

The few clothes that are South African made are expensive and of poor quality.

Well now that is an interesting point! Anyone ever try to ship it as a "life sized plush toy" or "satyrical taxidermy display"?

Not sure about the legalities, but what if it was a gift instead of a purchase? I mean, I'm sure they won't question it...

And 40%...

They can't justify charging that much for importing something that can't realistically be made in SA... I would contest it.

Contest SARS. Haha. You know that SARS rulings are appealed only to SARS, right? Courts have almost no jurisdiction over them. And it's actually low. Almost all other items of clothing is at 45% duties.

Seriously though, the government's answer would be:
1) It creates local jobs, due to the import tariffs.
2) Importing things is a capital ouflow, which affects our trade deficit.
3) It's money into the national fiscus.
4) Whether it's fair or not, it's the law and have to be followed, since it's applied without discrimination of any kind.

There's no downside to it for the government, and only upsides. My feelings is of no concern to them. After all, I can simply live without it.

(Sorry if I sound a little unhappy here)

Perhaps it would turn out cheaper to fly over with a near-empty suitcase and fly back with it. You could say you're a semi-pro performer for children's parties and that it's your tool of the trade.

Flying there and back (international and local flights) would be at least $2000.
I don't think that it's worth it.
Also, I image that the suit is quite bulky. That doesn't really work when flying.

In my experience, travelling fursuiters use vac-bags to squish their body suits & padding down to manageable sizes. My one friend brought two of his suits to Confuzzled this way, no problems.

Have you ever had an experience with the TSA?

I once saw them molest a woman in front of me.
They seriously stuck their hands down her pants, despite her many protests.
