Start of something big?

Maw top

Just top of the jaw for my furrsuit

Yes I am going to use steel for structural parts

I'd post pictures of my digigrade stilts but.... well I hurt myself on them and got very upset so the one got grinded up into chunks... then my dad used the other was used to make an bullet casing annealing machine.

So for now no digigrade shenanigans

Uhhh I would vehemently advise against using steel for your head. It's way too heavy, you'll break your neck wearing it. Heck just the clay nose on my head already adds a lot of weight and makes the muzzle twist when I shake my head. Unless you're planning a brace of some kind?

the amount of steel I am going to use for this is minimal. see that I posted up there? the rest is going to be about 2-3 more metal rods of same length. So a brace will not be needed.
It's quite light. For me anyways.

Edit: I can see it becoming a problem after maybe 5 hours but honestly after 5 hours I would have died of the heat

How big is that? Can you show it next to something else for scale?

Oh that's a lot smaller than I thought (that's what she said?).
Yeah that seems doable.

As a mechanical engineering student, this kind of stuff turns me on.

...

Okay, not really.
However, it does capture my interest. :P Initially, I shared Leeward's skepticism - steel is a fairly massive metal (it has a density of roughly 8 tonnes per cubic metre).

It is difficult to measure the dimensions of your rod (InsertObviousSexJokeHere), however, using your fifteen-centimetre ruler as a reference, I calculated each of those sets of rods (i.e what you have in that picture) as weighing about 250 grams each, assuming they are not hollow.
That means, with four of those on your body, you are carrying a weight of just approximately one kilogram.
That is well within acceptable limits. :D Your schoolbag probably weighed more.

Tip for construction.
Use copper tubing.

Why?

Easy to join (don't need welding machine)
Easy to cut
Easy to form

Won't it be too pliable then? I've watched plumbers work with copper tubing and almost all grades of it have some degree of flexibility.

It's a fursuit, not a bridge. The weight saving would offset the loss in strength. If the head is heavy enough to bend copper pipes, then it's too heavy to wear.

LOL!

And no I am not going to use copper tubes. that would require going out to buy a bunch and I don't have the money for that. What I DO have is a load of scrap steel and some polysterine(fuck I forgot the english word for it.)

SO I am going to put the steel to use

In high school we had to make bridges out of wooden rods (roughly chopstick diameter and ~30-40cm long) that could span a 20-30 cm gap and take a load of at least 5 kg. Wasn't so difficult.

So I was wondering how I could do the eyes and be able to see.
Anyone got some good ideas? Should I just get coloured plastic?

Several ideas. Mesh viewports like Beastcub's suits have. Modified toony eyes. Hybrid 3D eyes like those I made.

It depends what kind of look you are going for, toony is best to have big eyes made from foam paper and buckram with the iris colors painted on the buckram. For a more realistic look resin eyes would be the best.
I do not have any experience myself with resin eyes, but I spoke to someone about getting them made and apparently it's not that difficult nor expensive to have resin eyes made, though with resin eyes your would be looking from underneath the eyes through the tear ducts where as with toony eyes you would be looking through the iris of the eye.

With toony eyes there is 2 options you can go with. You can make 3D follow me effect which is very popular but if not done right it's damned scary and you have just normal eyes which are huge.

Normal toony eyes

Realistic eyes

There are a few options to consider which will best suit your look (pun intended)
There are also thousands of very helpful tutorials in making the eyes on YouTube and online generally. Some of my favorite tutorials are made by Matrices and Kloofsuits but both of them do toony look on the suits.
If you opt for the toony eyes, don't be afraid to drop me a pm. I know where to find what and how to make the 3D follow me eyes. I'm not as good as the person above with the follow me eyes but I know how to make them. For me the toony look with the 3D follow me eyes is a personal favorite since it brings the character to life and makes the character more approachable for the public, normal toony eyes look a bit fake to me.

I have yet to try and make a realistic suit but that is much much harder than these toony suits to make.

Hope that helped a bit ^.^
I'd rather be fursuiting

You'll have to use a lot of padding on the sides to protect your face, but I reckon you should try a simple strap around the back of your head with one over the top to further support the weight. I would suggest very... er... non-stretchy elastic because the weight would definitely stretch out normal elastic superfast.

See this tutorial for positioning - http://www.matrices.net/balaclava.asp

I wouldn't need too much to be honest.
I grinded off all sharp edges on it. though the hardness might cause some discomfort.

I need to do a little work to find the best wire to join the upper jaw and lower jaw (right now its just a little piece of metal wire)

And I'll check out that link. it looks interesting

I was thinking more about pinching injuries than cutting injuries to be honest. You can try using a split pin (not sure if that is the right name for it - it basically has two little arms that you can bend up to lock it in place?). It'll make a smooth finish on both sides & you can even glue/epoxy down the little arms to ensure they won't slip out. Not sure that you will find one that'll contend with the weight of the structure, but you handy types will probably know more about what is available.

(while I cannot yet provide a video of it I can however provide my train of thought)
"IT HURTS! OH GOD IT HURTS WHEN I SPEAK! But the jaw is following my own! yes! YEs!-OWW! The pain!"

needless to say I need to make a proper nose hold and maybe re-distribute weight a bit

Hahaha! Yeah pretty much - holding a weight in your hand is different from a weight hanging off your face for extended periods of time. Try to get most of the weight bearing support onto your head & off your face.

So I grinded off a chunk of metal to lighten the lowr jaw. Addes a rod to move pressure from my nose to the top of my head...
I bought some foam and a cloth.
Now I am going to go diggin through the pile of scrap searching for 2 springs that my dad said might be there...

I... I don't know what to do after that.... I work steel! I make helicopter concept models! I designed a working tank cannon! I dont know about working with foam and cloth!
