oh people do love to use that one. UwU/ where is your imagination cyber snep. ever heard of voice recognition/dictation software? ever heard of keyword monitoring? ever herd of automation for that matter? google reads all of your Gmail emails and monitors all your communication it can get its hands on and they do it for all the billions of people that use google related software... yet there are probably less than 3 actual people involved in this process. the south african government can hardly hold a candle to google but you get pretty sophisticated commercial spyware that can even analyze photos you send to identify the people in the photos. it builds a pretty accurate profile of you and its all done automatically. you can actually download these for free but i wouldn't recommend it since they spy on you too and most of the free ones report back to their creators in effect just using your machine as an unwitting host to spy for them.

UwU/ and in truth you are probably not special enough to warrant attention or effort... except... implanting people with stuff is really cheap and easy so doing it on mass is feasible enough... especially for governments and large organizations. and you have to wonder... behavioral modification implants both chemical and electrical have existed for over 40 years and if the early models could effectively change a persons emotional state and mood, what can the newer models do?

I know Google does it their AI systems to train them better in certain scenarios. But I can tell you for sure that theres bo constant stream if data nocing from ny phone to the Internet.
And believe me. If they were to monitor anyone. Itd be me. The amount of times I hat to look up explosives recipoes for my dads factory. Hell. I got a gun from a client in the malls parking lot yesterday.

But what do they gain? What would the purpose be of this mass espionage.

If they did monitor everything. Howcome they couldn't have stopped the school shootings? Howcome cant they stop terrorists from bombing things?

And most importantly. How can they hide it from so many people?
i mean. I have sophisticated network equipment between myself and the internet, and it can't pick up any data traffic to Google right now.
And the crazy person will tell me they're in on it, right?

Well. There's a Tenda router on the front end. And Asus router between that. An Ubiquiti after that and a mikrotik behind that.
Which means thats already 5 devices(including my phone) that have to hide that kind of data traffic.

If you have a secret, the best thing is to keep it to yourself. The second-best is to tell one other person if you must. There is no third best.

Id they monitor people, how has it stayed a secret if millions of people have to be involved in keeping it a secret?

Espionage provides information and information can be used for all sorts of things. To gain advantages, to bribe, to know who is important. Things will fall through the cracks as well. Since there is a major incentive to keep any such programmes hidden, we wouldn't know if they are used anyway. Information from secret investigations gives possible targets, then warrants are drawn up for other, sometimes faked, reasons which allows the information to be investigated without revealing the surveillance programmes. This is known from leaks in the US. Further, if they are keeping their programme secret then you don't know how many school shootings or terrorists were stopped before anything could happen. Personally, I'm not too worried about the South African government spying on anyone because I think they're too inept to really get much done.

Hiding stuff also isn't a problem. They don't need you to be sending traffic to Google all the time because there are other ways of tracking. It's well-known that Facebook tracks people through Facebook like buttons on websites, even if you are not logged in. You have to communicate with the website anyway and there are multiple components which wouldn't necessarily have to take data directly from you but can take it from the website itself. I doubt there's a single government without a spy programme or some level of surveillance. The US and UK are known for very detailed ones. China's level of surveillance is even scarier. Can those be kept secret? Yes. Historically these things have been secret for a long time before being revelaed. When the East German Stasi archives were opened to the people who were spied on, everyone was shocked at the amount of information and level of detail. Even of things you'd consider inconsequential. Modern spy programmes also stay hidden for years. The US PRISM programme was operating, with tech companies like Google, in secret for about six years before Snoweden leaked the information.
