Sometimes, yes ("Desperation" was a bit of a slog, if you ask me). But most times? No. That I will deny. His first really successful novel, Carrrie, was only something like 70 000 words long. Another thing to remember is that, just because something is long, does not necessarily mean it's slow-paced. Misery had a bit of heft to it, and even though its main character was bedridden and could hardly move, it still had really good pacing, and created an amazing amount of suspense despite the simplicity of its setting.

If you want to talk about long winded authors, one of the worst offenders (in my humble opinion) is none other than JRR Tolkien. Holy crap that guy could go on and on about the most inane, inconsequential things.

In SK's defense, they didn't stay true to the source material. But yeah, that whole thing was a monumental failure. I heard they did a pretty good job with IT, though.

Speaking of selling out, they're even going to turn Tommyknockers into a movie now, which even SK himself thinks is a bad idea. The whole thing is just one big gigantic metaphor for cocaine abuse. :/

You know, now that I think about it, I'm not entirely sure how much of a say SK has in which of his books they turn into movies, or even how they're portrayed. A lot of that might be up to the publisher.

UwU/ oh trust me, i've had a lot of fast paced long things in me to know that very well.

hehe. but its not the length of the books that bother me, its like you said about the dog pissing all around the bush... sometimes he just goes on and on about things unnecessarily. Owo i mean seriously when something is blue i don't want to know how everyone feels about how blue something is and what kind of blue everyone thinks it is. if you want people to get into a story you need to make it bite sized so folks can keep it in their minds till a plot component resolves at least.
Contrast wrote: Wed Apr 11, 2018 12:28 am they didn't stay true to the source material
exactly! and he knew that they wouldn't! UwU/ what some folks call the crown of Mr. king they turned into a heavily condensed piece of racially provocative sensationalism!

i think they've done that literal eons ago actually.

as far as i know he pretty much promised he wouldn't let them make it into a movie, that's why they made a comic series out of it. BUUUUT NUUUUUH! <w< mother fucker sold out! i hope he feels violated proportional to the violation his work had suffered.

I am busy thinking about my academic future. I'm in third year, now. Next year, I have to make some important choices - among them, choosing whether to finish my BEng in mechanical or choose aeronautical. Aeronautical and mechatronics (subset of mechanical) both fascinate me. But I have to choose one. Hm. At least I have just under a year to decide.

He did publicly tweet about his approval of the story, and how well they handled the fanchise. However, what people sometime forget is that they didn't make the Dark Tower books into a movie, they made a movie about a different turning of the wheel, in either the past or the future (or does it matter?) of the books. The first book makes it clear that the last turning was not completely the same as the one the books are about.

The other advantage of a book with a bit of heft is that it can be used as a self-defence weapon. Something I lost when I switched to ebooks. A tablet is not nearly as intimidating as a decent inorganic chemistry or calculus textbook.

Op 'n ander noot, ek het altyd op skool die dikste Engelse boeke gekry uit die biblioteek vir 'n boekverslag. Onderwyseres het hulle "sprinkaanbybels" genoem.

If I draw (heh, I know, so a proper artist) draw a picture of a person with an exposed penis, it is considered R-rated / NSFW.

There are public statues in Europe where human genitalia are used as a fountain outlet. There is the very famous David scuplture. Are these also R-rated / NSFW when posting them in a forum with a different cultural background, like here?

I actually had a similar conversation on a Discord chat a couple of weeks ago regarding art and porn and NSFW. There are many pieces of art that are displayed in museums or on websites that are fully accessible to all age groups which are presumably considered okay because of either their age or their importance and are not judged because of their content. That's not entirely the case, there are many, misguided, attempts to censor various artworks, both in museums and on social media but that is usually followed by a pretty decent outcry. There are also different standards in different cultures. Europe is far more tolerant of nudity than America is and many European cities include nude areas in public parks. There's a light up sculpture, publicly-visible, outside the hotel in Berlin which hosts Eurofurence which depicts the climax, if you will, of the Greek myth of Leda and the swan (and the Wikipedia entry for that is a good example of my previous points). These are things that would require a warning in many different forms of media . I think it is all indicative of a society that applies social conventions inconsistently and tries to draw arbitrary boundaries between things that are not really all that different.

Intimate with a wind tunnel? I don't know. That sounds like a very airy relationship. I am not sure if I should just throw caution to the wind like that! :P
But, yes. I am honestly still at the fork in the road at the moment between the two. But I suppose time and some more research will make it clearer for me.

So apparently my cat tried to self-immolate last night... this morning we found a chunk of his butt fluff singed into a clump, so we figured he most probably sat next to the essential oil burner and didn't realise his pants were on fire.

As one can see, theropod dinosaurs are streamlined for aerodynamic efficiency, making them the ultimate life forms. If you want to build a weapon to surpass Metal Gear (here's to hoping someone gets that reference), build a raptor launcher.

At around 1AM my dad called out on the radio, they tried to steal one of our tenants cars, they'd have gotten away, but my dad happened to be outside because of a stolen gate motor. They tried to steel our bakkie yesterday night, and he thought it was going to go down there. Then this car camebdownbthe roadbwhere he was,al and he pulled it over. But then the passengers jumped out and fled... Only them did he noticed it was Natasha's car when he saw the Mia sticker on the side...

Lol, something similar happened to us this morning.

At about 4:30am, our intercom rings. Unusual. Who is trying to visit us at that time? It is followed by one sharp burst of a police siren. My dad and I went out with our dog to investigate. A police officer greets us at the gate.
It turns out robbers had somehow opened our gate and tried to make off with my dad's motorbike, but had abandoned it by the street. My dad presented his keys and they returned it to him. Nothing else was stolen...

What is worrying, however... Is how they opened our gate without switching it to manual (first thing we checked), lifting the rack off the pinion, or similar tricks. It seems they opened it remotely or using the keypad. A normal way. Which means it is likely inside job. We're going to be talking to our gardener and domestic helper, and upgrading our security.
