Burqa Ban Bad News for Austrian Furries

Per the article above, it seems the new Burqa Ban is having some unintended consequences in Austria. Thoughts?

I would imagine the Austrian furry community must be getting pretty frustrated and anxious now. Imagine if you just bought a new fursuit there?

Of course, these unfortunate consequences could have been avoided if Austrian government, instead of making a thinly-veiled (excuse the pun) attempt to make a neutral ban on all headgear, was honest and explicitly banned burqas and niqabs because those things are part of a shitty culture which oppresses women.

Now it's just no fun allowed. :)

I've Tweeted the Austrofurs about this to see if they doing anything about it. I think in the US, furries helped get a similar law repealed (or some exceptions put in). I was worried that would happen when I first heard about it.

It sucks. But it also depends on the wording of the law. "The authorities claim the legislation is “religiously neutral,” also targeting any headgear that conceals face in the public" - given that many furry conventions reserve right of admission in privately hired venues, it is debatable whether this applies at conventions in their venues or not. Additionally, furmeets at private residences may also be immune to this. I haven't read the law as it appears correctly, though, so I cannot be sure. But it really is a bummer.

Private events will be fine but it would mean no fursuit walks. It'll also be interesting to see how they interpret it during Halloween.

Halloween would probably be exempt under the 'cultural events' clause.

Yeah, I was thinking about the fursuit of walks and outings. There are some great videos out there of fursuiters doing fun things in public.

By that logic it would also apply to motorcycle helmets and mascot costumes at sporting events. I don't think it's cause for alarm because the exceptions are painfully obvious.

There are exemptions which are mentioned in the article such as safety headgear (motorcycle helmets), headgear worn for medicle purposes and headgear which is part of a street parade or cultural events.

Still, it is very limiting, and as seen in the article, affects mascots, street performers, and furries not involved in a big event of sorts.

There is a thread on the Austrian furry forum from when the law was first proposed and it's still being discussed. I didn't translate it all though so I'm not entirely sure what they are saying.
