Discriminating Furry Article in FHM

#1

Post by Yukon »

The other night at a house party, the host says he has something interesting about furries I must read… comes to me with the latest (Jan 2009) FHM magazine. He then opens up to a page with a large photo of a fox fursuiter having sex with a rooster fursuiter. I didn’t want to draw too much attention to my interest in reading the article in front of the others there, but they basically went on to say how “We at FHM are very accepting and accommodating people, but this is where we draw the line”. They describe the act of “yiffing” as people having sex in animal suits - which is now the impression that will be left all over South Africa when they hear the word "yiff". They also say how furries are a “weird bunch”. There wasn’t too much else significant they said about us other than generally bashing us and giving the wrong impression.

This is quite sad that so many people are going to read that article as their first time hearing of a furry, and make assumptions and use it as their first lasting impression. I’m considering writing a reply to FHM regarding that article, something non-biassed and factual, which will give readers a better understanding, and most importantly convey that there are VERY few furries who actually do that, or even have the slightest interest in it.

I recommend you do so. At the very least, anyone who reads it might understand the fandom better. It's pretty annoying when people slam things they don't understand without even making an effort to find out more. Unfortunately, this happens quite often.
Back after a long absence! Sometimes Siamese, sometimes Husky. Can't blame me for indecision, just gief me feesh :V

Well it's not good but I doubt that many people read FHM. Or maybe not I dunno but I can tell you that most people will read it, laugh at it and forget all about it. It's not that likely to stick. And those that do read it might actually look up furry and find out the articles wrong. It's certainly not the first article to say something like that either. Rather look on the bright side, furry has made its way into South Africa.

A reply would be good but I doubt they'll pay any attention to it. And no ones likely to read it in the next issue either. There are far worse things they could have said.

It might be real good to write them a letter, maybe even, if necesarry, we can set up some sort of petition all of us can sign.. though I think there may be too few of us to make a real difference.. I know my brother reads the FHM.. I can only hope that he did not see that :/

I'm on my way out NOW to go get that stupid magazine and see what they wrote

I'm not going to allow them to screw up the furry's name like that.
I agree that when people hear the word yiff, they'll think about that pic they saw in FHM.
I'm not going to allow them to generalize the furry community for what 2 idiots have done.

I'm PROUD to be a fur, it's who I am, and always will be. I'll tell the world I'm a fur - and all the other furs are like family to me! However we do get some furs who will go overboard and do these yiffy things - but it's just like in normal society you choose who you associate with.

I'm not going to stand for this - I'll sign petitions, and write a letter myself if I must.

And I'll back up anyone else who wants to give these people a piece of their mind - who's with me?

Of course. Buying the magazine will really show them. I think you guys are overreacting. A lot. Writing a letter is fine but a petition? What are you petitioning against? All you'll be doing is drawing more attention to it.

I'm not gonna BUY it I'm gonna go read it in the shop - I know the shop owner.

I do not think we're over reacting, I'm not a person to bend over and take it up the tailpipe.

If they're talking about furries they're talking about ME. YOU. Any fur out there!

Nearly all the mentions of furs in the media has been negative but no ones going to pay much attention to an FHM article. I'm saying you're overreacting because you're making a big deal out of something no one's really going to care about. People on this site are about the only furs that will ever even know about it and those that buy FHM will pass over the article to go look at the pics they bought the magazine for.

The other furry stereotype is the whole drama thing and that's what you're trying to make. It's not a fair or good article but it's not wrong either, just misrepresented. All you need to do is write a letter about the corrections. Just let it go.

Im with electrocat, it's not about being a drama queen.

But I think if everyone has to know about the furs, they should have the correct impression, not what was displayed in the magazine.

And furries are no weirder than any of my other friends.

Agreed..

I can't stand how people read and believe the first thing they see. If i see something "different" i usually go find out more about it before making my mind up.. pity not many others do the same. Plus, who the hell are they to publish something that they obviously know nothing about. Whoever does their research needs to be kicked in the tail..

I dont know how much of an impact writing a letter would do considering they're such a big and well read magazine. However, i fully support it. At least it would be taking some sort of stand.

I so totaly gree withe all the furs that wana take a stad aganst FHM.

But it shouldent just be one leter it should be as many as possable & a petition .Thay are insulitng our community.

If they did anything to insult any other community out there eg Jewish people. Lets just say that thay did someting that showed the Jewish community in any negative way do you know how much trouble they would get themselfs into for that.

One thing Im not just talking about the Jewish community Im just using them as an example of one of many communities thay could pissoff.

Seriously publish anything negative about any mainstreem community & you will have a lot of realy pissed off people on your hands taking a stand aganst you. So why cant we do the same to FHM

I finerly finde something that I passionate about & now this happens. *turns feral & starts to speak in a sceary voise* We should rip there lungs out throuhg there asses. Then roast them & eat them. Death to FHM *Turns back to normal* Okay maybe thats something a bit violent but, we have to make a stand & shout out

I AM FURRY & PROUD OF IT!!! HEAR ME RAW, HOWL & GROWL!!

Anyone who has seen the furry wars on YouTube will know that furries making a stand often embarrass us more than doing any good. This is why I suggested a non-biassed and factual article, educating the "hoomans". Putting up any sort of fight will give a further wrong impression.. and will be a loosing battle against a magazine that is out there to get readers in and gossiping (which is what makes them money). They would probably love to see us try put up a fight for that reason alone.

People will inevitably learn about furries either way, and I’d prefer them to be exposed by way of less biased and discriminatory source as their first impression.

If people keep writing bad stuff about furries it might be illegal to be a furry. They might get the impression that furry is just as sickening as zoophilia.

Why not just send people to wikipedia? Last time I checked it was a good and fair article on furs that pretty much everyone was happy with.

Agreed. Furries are a growling subculture because people are starting to realize its not jsut for the yiff and the sexy pics. Being a furry is about loving animals, anthro cartoons, anime and other things. Were jsut about as lethal as a pc nerd, a musical groupie, or a sports fanatic. Each one has its darker (sometimes) of porn and such. Its jsut because no one understands it comepletely.

I'll get a draft for my two cents into that article you send soon...

Unfortunately the media always pick up on the negative aspects of any group and or groups.

It is something members of the fandum have had to put up with. There is a lot of good but unfortunately there is a little bit of bad which the media focuses on. You will never read about the good stuff, only the bad.

You can write a letter and complain, but I believe it will be like painting a target on the Fandoms "back". Yes it "labels" us with the, and i am going to say it "Freaks", but shrug it off. Sticks and stones etc.

There, said my five cents.

Going to have to hit up the local sellers here so that I might be able to find this issue. I used to have a subscription to FHM, but they got all messed up here in the U.S. so I've got to find it elsewhere. Still, insulting as it may be, if still sounds like an interesting read. Especially if I were to write a letter into them, as I had done in the past about other things.

I have to agree with Yukon that sending a non biassed and factual letter would be the best thing. Going balls to the walls furry pride at FHM will just make it worse like it tends to always do.

True enough. I'm gonna pick up a copy of this issue first, and see just what there is to be made from it. Should be interesting, none the less.
