Hosting on ZAFur

I know hosting in SA is expensive, and I was thinking that we already have a server hosted. It should be fairly easy to create a home page or a subdomain for some furs, and help them get their name out there, give them a place to put their stuff they want to show off.

There will have to be limits, of course, as it's a shared service. Also, this may potentially be a way for the forum owners to recover the forum's hosting fees, which I suspect they are paying out of their own pockets now.

as the furs that's actually paying for the hosting, i can comment.

The hosting is 10GB of diskspace, it's unlimited bandwidth, unlimited subdomains, unlimited email addresses, for 9.90 CHF a month ... Current exchange rate that's around R90 a month.

i was donated money to get the hsoting running, and since i host my personal website on the same hosting place to keep zafur free and fee-free for the moment it makes me happy. The fact we have 85 odd members where i didn't think there were over 20 is reason enough for me to keep on paying the minute sum i am for the hosting.

I'd love to help showcase fur's artwork, and stuff here, all they need to do is ask, and we ca give them their own place to host stuff.

I don't think the idea is bad, but I do think you should have asked the people that are paying before even posting something like this.

I'm with anoyomouse on this idea. Since he has shown his approval, I guess a few furs can start developing their own site

Though their would be a few factors, such as the style of the furs site, compatibility with other browsers, access issues, etc.

I think once this aspect starts gaining more momentum, we would definitely have to look deeper into it.*grins*

As for the hosting fees, I'm planning to help out the mousie with the next fees requirement.

I just didn't want the hosting fees to be a burden on a few, while we all leech off them. But as long as the owners are willing to pay for it, or we get donations in, we can of course offer this as a free service.

We will probably need to develop a few pages for the site itself, featuring some SA fur pics, links to the forums and the individual pages, etc. However, I would be in favour of letting each fur design their page as they see fit, without restrictions on conformity. We will of course have to be careful of sizes (possibly implement a disk quota?) and think about uploads to the site (FTP?).

Also not entirely sure how many would initially sign up for this, and how many would simply like a link to their real website.

it's fairly easy to set up, and yeah, ftp account (secure) into the section they want, there's no disk quota that i could find, but everyone that gets a site knows about fairplay and fair use.

also just have to be very specific about content, else you can get into trouble ... i can link the terms of the hosting provider here, but they are in swiss-german

also please note, that unless there is a lock and key mechanism beind it, no porn, else the host shuts down the site .. the yiffy section complies because you need to be verified to get to see it.

The front page of ZAFur also needs to be done, and made to look pretty, we can link in a message board to display the latest topics, etc.

There's a joomla on the site too that we were looking into making the main site with articals, bios, things of interest, but the idea never took off, and personally having a wiki is a bit too complex and it's a bit hard finding exactly what you want in one, so yeah, any ideas people?

I would definitely suggest a copy of the site rules, for one. We can get someone to translate it for us (any takers?) or perhaps for added fun use Google Translate. Also, any rules we add should be clearly noted there.

A wiki can be handy if we want to present information (a page on each fur?) but I agree, for now it's not really worth it yet.
