I understand why people would be opposed to this: it's better to have people making thoughtful comments, than simply giving a click.
At the same time though, sometimes I want people to know that their post has been read and appreciated, without butting into the conversation just to say, "hey [fur] I thought your post was great."
Should ZAFur get a simple like function? Doesn't have to be like Facebook where it names and links the people giving the likes.
I don't know. I don't mind. It might be more effort than it's worth, but it's just a thought.

Re: Likes?
Er, not sure if you're agreeing in an ironic way, or if you're suggesting an alternative to a like button?
Hahaha!
Re: Likes?
It hasn't worked on forums before, it's a dumb idea really.
People turn into like-whores.

Re: Likes?
Possibly even more cumbersome to implement;
You only get a specified number of "likes" to give out every day.

Seize the day, not your bearings.

Re: Likes?
I would turn into a "like hore". "Give me moar likes pleaze!"
Re: Likes?
I'm not sure, I guess it would be nice to know whether things you say are popular/unpopular (i.e. each post can be -ed or -ed by people and has a positive/negative rating), but it doesn't really apply to forum posts in the same way that it does to comments because comments tend to be short and only say one thing whereas posts tend to be longer so you might only be referring to part of it, which is why quoting works better. Then again, having a sort of "karma" rating could be a good thing, but it seems like more trouble than it's worth to me. Plus I have some bad memories concerning a forum I used to be on that had a karma system that was extremely corrupt.

Re: Likes?
Also, not entirely sure about this. MyBB tried a ratings system for posts before, and they dropped it very quickly. I've seen a like-like system on other forums where the users seems to be happy with it. I don't really see the use/need right now. But I may be missing the point ...
Also, we'll have to see what PHPBB actually supports. There are a lot of mods out there, but lots of mods usually mean more work when we upgrade the forums (which we do from time to time).

Nah you're not missing the point: that's pretty much all there is to it. It's not really necessary, especially on a forum of this size: people can say they liked a post or agree, without causing too much of an interruption.
It was just a thought.
