Why are the Main Topics for the regional part of the forum so inconstant?
I get why some gof them are merged, cause there's so few people there.
The single ones WC and GP have the cities listed, but not the FS.
But then KZN+EC have Durban when the rest of the merged ones have no cities named.
•Cape Town - Western Cape
•Jozi - Gauteng
•Durbs - KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape
•Limpopo and Mpumalanga
•Northwest and the Northern Cape
•Freestate

Agreed, it's very inconsistent. Why are the cities mentioned at all?
I would have done it like this:
  • Western Cape
  • Gauteng
  • Freestate
  • KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape
  • Limpopo and Mpumalanga
  • Northwest and the Northern Cape
Or even like this:
  • Western Cape
  • Gauteng
  • Rest of South Africa
  • Rest of the world

Yeah i want an international section... So Rakuen and I can be the only people posting in it lol.

In all fairness I think lumping the smaller provinces together is unfair, regardless of their size. Have all nine provinces separate and then rest of the world maybe

The hassle with this is (and we found out by accident) is that the DB stores a number, corresponding to the position in the list. I pointed out to the previous admins that Free State was missing, and when it was added, all furs with the "Other" category got listed as "Free State".

We can change that, but it would mean everyone has to update their profiles, or we'd have incorrect data. Or we need to do a fairly massive DB cleanup.

Large number of iterations =/= complex operation. Sounds like all that is needed is a little filtering and updating. I say we go for it.

I don't think it's unfair to lump together all other provinces if collectively they only contain as many members as WP or GP. I mean, if you look at our members it's roughly 1/3 WP, 1/3 GP, and 1/3 everything else.

If it were changed then this would make more sense.

[*]Whole of South Africa
[*]Western Cape
[*]Gauteng
[*]Rest of South Africa

The whole of South Africa section is important for topics that are relevant to all. There is no need for an international section as the regional section is mostly intended for organising meets.

Well, we do have registered users from the US, UK, Germany, Austria, Australia, Poland, Denmark and probably some others too.

Well, the best colours for on-screen reading are a light-grey background with a very-dark-grey foreground. That tends to achieve the best reading speeds with the least eye-strain. In dim environments though, I'd agree, minimising the amount of bright light reduces strain.

The biggest problem is that the majority of the forum won't update their profiles, sadly.

Thus is the limitation of SQL, we had a healthy debate about this two weeks ago at work when we had a session on NoSQL and Cassandra.

Anyways... the current theme is something that works, especially for me with mobile devices I use to access the forum.

If the position makes the number, does that mean that just changing the name won't have undesirable consequences?
So if the city names are removed, would that cause the same problems or not?
Like, leave the order as it is, but just remove the city names.

It might work, but it's still quite clunky. That's because it works by luck and not design.

Oh, and it keeps dropping. At least it isn't like the $5 an hour Dubai Internet. What a rip off.

Well, getting a decent link to an object traveling at 940km/h is a challenge, a very formidable one.

Look, it's amazing that it even works at all (except when over the North Pole), and I most assuredly appreciated being able to badger all of you at 38,000 feet. That didn't change the fact that, removed from the circumstances, it was a pretty poor experience.

Shocking, it is somehow better than the Dubai Airport Internet. At it's certainly better than having to restaurant hop every one and a half hours just for the "free" Internet.
