PHPBB Upgrade to 3.2.1

#1

Post by Valerion »

Hi all,

If all goes well (I am currently without power, let's hope I get it back in time to do preparation), I am planning to do an upgrade of the forum on Saturday 14 October starting at 17:00. During this time I will drop the forum into read-only mode. I am hoping this will take no more than an hour or so.

In the meantime I will have to de-activate and re-install the current themes on the server. This gives us an opportunity to look at potential new styles to implement, or even to design our own. If you have suggestions, please comment here (including a link) and let's see if we can get a good style or a list of decent ones together.

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styl ... _styles-12

Any of the above that supports 3.2.1 would be valid - if it looks at least tasteful. Clashing neon colours will likely get vetoed. The default theme for PHPBB 3.2 is prosilver, so prosilver-derived themes will likely be more compatible than subsilver2-based themes.

Any relatively plain theme should be customisable enough to allow a logo and banner, surely?

In terms of aesthetics and theme choice I have only two suggestions:
> Something mostly dark will be easier on the eyes, and looks more modern.
> The fewer hues on the palette the better; simplicity and consistency is best.

The "Black" theme here is a good example: it's harmonious, mostly dark, and has only three hues (shades of grey for background, blue for interactive objects, red for selections).

Apart from that I don't really care as long as all functionality is present.

Upgrade is mostly done, I just need to recover the images for the styles.

😞 There is emoji support in 3.2, but no way to PICK an emoji to display ... if you have one in your clipboard, it'll work. Or if you happen to know how to type one ...

This Steam thing looks new and I added it to my profile now. Hope we get the icon back soon though.

For the moment the Board Rules extension is gone, so the rules are not displayed on each page and the sign-up page any more. Of course, the rules do stay in effect.

I added several new extensions which will hopefully be useful as time goes on.

1) Steam ID display
2) Drafts for messages you are busy composing
3) Avatars display on the membership list
4) Google Search Bar for the site under advanced search settings
5) Password Strength display when you enter one
6) Pages. We can use this to create static information pages within the forum structure. Still need to see if it's gonna work for us.

Themes: prosilver (ships with phpBB), Black (default for the board), Digi (my favorite). If you want a light theme, use prosilver, otherwise pick between Black and Digi.

If there's any issues, please let me know.

Animew brings up a good point. On mobile, even for full browsers like Firefox, there is no mention of the last post in each forum section. Only when you can see the threads themselves. This makes it very difficult to check for new posts if you aren't logged in. Is there a way we can fix that?

This is a style issue. Switch over to the Digi style and the issue goes away. I see it's present for both prosilver and Black, will likely have to look at installing a different style. Or if someone wants to design one for the site, we can as well.

That's weird cause Black was the default style before and that wasn't an issue. Why would they have changed the style?

I've got a few niggles, too. The board index is no longer collapsible, which means we have to scroll all the way up or down when we want to see who's online or check the newest posts. Also, the "new posts" link isn't out in the open anymore, which means we have to access it via the dropdown menu, which adds an extra click. ALSO, the quickbar no longer moves down as you read a thread, which means you have to scroll AAAALL the way up again if you want to access the "new posts" link. :<

Damn, the Black style is clearly not good.

Collapsable (per category) and new posts are both available in "Digi". I never used the quickbar, can you post a screenshot showing what you mean?

It's not the end of the world, but it does feel like they went out of their way to make everything slightly less convenient.

The Digi one doesn't look good though (and doesn't have the logo). But the thing is, the black theme had all of that before. Are you sure that can't be re-enabled in the settings or use an earlier version of the black theme (if that was also updated)?

The logo works for me ... perhaps do a hard refresh? The style is the same one as before, and it claims to be configurable, I am looking into that. However, from 3.1 to 3.2 was a complete rewrite so it may be different now.

Oh, and I added a up/down button, should be in the lower right of the screen once you scroll

Spoiler tags now work. Thanks to Rakuen for pointing this out.

Added in 1 minute 1 second:
Also, you can now easily copy and paste links using the post numbering options.

Added in 3 minutes 53 seconds:
I think the perfect way forward here is to actually construct a new style for the forum. I will consult with some people and see where we go with this, and if it's feasible.

Added in 1 minute 20 seconds:
BTW, you will also see posts auto-merging. This post is a perfect demonstration, showing at what point the additions were made. Currently I have this on a 3-hour timer, and it ONLY works for successive posts. The timer can be changed if needed. There is also a do-not-merge at the bottom which will override this.

Try one of those?
Is that what you put in yours?
When i put in:
https://steamidfinder.com/lookup/Splicer-Fox/
or
https://steamcommunity.com/id/Splicer-Fox/
It then changes the link to that number 76561198110979958
That then goes too Natsukowo which is wrong.

Does anybody know how to get this number for myself?
Or why the hell its defaulting too this Natsukowo?

Most of the remaining issues seems style-related ... we are planning a ZAFur-specific style, but that may take a bit, as people are busy with tests, etc. right now.

RIP Digi Black. You will be missed.

On a somewhat serious note though. What useful benefit did this upgrade give us?
I suppose the steam profile thing is okay; it would have been better if this was a gaming forum but eh, it's okay, I guess.

And when are these stylistic issues going to be addressed? I mean, I find it quite vexing that the phpBB logo is displaying at the top instead of the normal Zafur one.
(Of course I get you're going through a few personal issues at the moment but I thought I'd ask in the meantime anyway.)

Upgrades usually give access to latest add-ons while fixing bugs and security holes in older versions. I don't know exactly what the changelog is here.

If you are seeing the phpBB logo and force reloaded the page then you are probably not using the official forum theme. For the default black theme that the forum uses the zafur logo displays correctly.
