I honestly haven't the foggiest... We did have a guest house a while back, then it might have made sense... But i don't know why they decided to get a hippo, or even where... They just when "hey, we might get a hippo"
pygmy hippo's are adorable. I met a pair at the lion and rhino park in Krugersdorp... they are so cute and play in the water and look like underdeveloped hippos.
and from what I hear, as long as you have the space for them, they are pretty easy to look after.

I've been wanting a pet of my (our) own for a while now but most conventional types wouldn't have worked out: dogs are too big for flats, I'm allergic to cats, my mate is scared of snakes, and we both agree that rodents are too smelly and birds are too noisy.
A few days ago my mate surprised me with a 30L aquarium, but by pure sad coincidence the day he got it was the day my dog died (he had bought it before I told him the news). So I took to it in a therapeutic manner and set it up, carefully researching every step.
I now have 3 live plants, 6 silvertip tetras, and a Chinese algae eater (sucking loach).
Aquariums are fun, I have multiple tanks but no fish at the moment. I used to breed with Killifish and sell the eggs online but then the water here got messed up ank killed more than half of them and the ones that were left wouldn't spawn anymore. I am going to order eggs again at the end of the year and start breeding again. I also had mustache Danio's, Fairy Shrimp, Beta splendins and guppies but the guppies were meh...not challenging enough lol
The circumstances of your birth are irrelevant, It's what you do with the gift of life that matters.

But still... in my opinion if your pet can easily kill you, then it is too exotic to be your pet
Easily kill meaning? Dogs can kill people pretty easily. A mouse could chew through wire insulation, leading to a fire that kills you. That would take it no effort. A horse could kill a person with little effort too.

Well... I've yet to see someone pet and snuggle with a puff-adder and live. I would be amazed if someone actually does this.

Well a friend gave me a book called Snakes In My Bed which is written by a South African who set a record for..
Austin then commenced work as Curator of Reptiles at the largest privately owned reptile and animal facility in Southern Africa, the Hartbeespoort Dam Snake and Animal Park. It was during this period that Austin established a Guinness World Record 'snake sit-in' for living in a 3 metre by 4 metre glass cage, with thirty-six venomous snakes, including black mambas, for a period of one-hundred-and-seven days and nights. He accomplished this amazing feat in order to raise money for the purchase of a companion for Kaiser, the Park's lone male African Mountain Gorilla. The details of this record were published in the Guinness Book of Animal Records. The specifications and conditions of this record have never been duplicated or broken.
