If you're going to suggest Metallica you really can't leave out Nothing Else Matters. I like Paradise Lost from Symphony X as well.

In any case if you're going to listen to metal you have to listen to a bunch of different bands. I don't know all the ones Ivic listed but I can tell you metal is probably the widest genre there is.
Cradle of Filth's Beneath The Howling Stars, Judas Priest's Beyond The Realm of Death, Bloodthorn's Sounds of Death and Nightwish's Tenth Man Down all fall under metal but all are very different from one another.
