Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
Hitomi-sensei no Hokenshitsu (Dr. Hitomi's Infirmary), the weirdest manga I have read in quite a while. It's about a cyclops who works as a middle school nurse in a world where absolutely everyone is either some kind of monster or mutant (think Amazing World of Gumball, but more Japanese). The story focusses on Dr. Hitomi and her attempts to help the students deal with their (often bizarre) problems.
This manga isn't particularly ecchi but it is very fetishistic. How can something not be ecchi but still be fetishistic? Well... when you say 'ecchi' you think of panty shots and idiotic protagonists tripping into boobs. Hitomi-sensei has almost none of that. What it does have is stuff like eyeball licking, exhibitionism, detachable body parts, transformation, and even very light vore (and much, much more). This manga manages to touch on a wide variety of fetishes without resorting to base perversion. The story (which is incredibly funny and unexpectedly touching at times) is always at the forefront. Highly entertaining and definitely worth your time if you're looking for a quick laugh or a slew of "WTF am I reading!?" moments.

"reading" homestuck...
Not quite reading, as most of it is looking at pictures, but I guess it counts. But I'm really enjoying it so far

It was recommended to me by a friend with questionable taste. I had no idea it had nudity, sex and depravity in it. He should have just said that in the first place. Thanks Lee

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
My favorite poem, and also the one I'm currently reading, called "if":
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Assassination Classroom, by Matsui Yuusei.
Okay, this one is a bit odd. It's about a tentacle monster who intends to blow up the earth in one year. Naturally, all the governments of the world are trying to kill it, but there's a problem. This creature can move at speeds of Mach-20, which makes it almost impossible, since it can easily evade pursuers and even dodge bullets.
Here's where it gets weird. The creature struck a deal with the world's leaders. It doesn't want to die (obviously), but if they allow it to become the homeroom teacher for a certain junior high school, it would be more than happy to let them try to kill it all they want. What's more, it would even help out by teaching the students how to murder it before the year is through.
This creates a weird classroom setting where the sensei is also an assassination target and all the students are also potential assassins, trying to juggle the rigours of everyday school life with the knowledge that the world will end in one year if they don't off their teacher in time.
And if the destruction of all life on earth isn't enough of a motivator, the 10 billion Yen bounty sure doesn't hurt...

Just finished listening/reading The Martian - Andy Weir. I've had it since last year but never got around to it.
It's pretty good! Very isolating and written in a matter of fact way that I find endearing.
I'm not sure how they'll pull off the character's quirks in the movie though, but I watch the movies more as tributes to the books than actually trying to be 100% accurate.

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
Boku dake ga Inai Machi (The Town Only I Don't Live In), by Sanbe Kei. It's about a struggling manga artist named Satoru who works as a part-time pizza delivery guy. Highly anti-social and withdrawn, he finds it difficult to maintain relationships and get along with others.
What interested me in this manga is his "ability" (it's actually more of a "condition", since he has absolutely no control over it) to go through "reruns". Sometimes, seemingly at random, he'll be thrust back in time and forced to relive the same minutes over and over again until he can find the "oddity", something that needs to be changed in order for him to escape the loop. This usually entails saving someone's life, or simply noticing something or acting in a way that changes the course of events just enough for the "oddity" to never occur.
The art style isn't the prettiest, and the translation certainly leaves something to be desired, but the story is definitely worth a read.

My high school had that poem on the wall in one place.LaShadow wrote:My favorite poem, and also the one I'm currently reading, called "if":
I started reading Furries Among Us; it's a collection of essays about the furry fandom written by furries (Fred Patten and Kyell Gold being just two) as well as members of the IARP (Kathy Gerbasi and Nuka).

Honestly, everyone that I have spoken to agrees that the book is better than the film. A lot more time is spent developing his character, and he feels a lot more isolated.Rocket_Dog wrote:Just finished listening/reading The Martian - Andy Weir. You have to read Misery. Definitely my favourite King book, and the reason I became a novelist. Dead Zone is good, too. And Fire Starter. And Different Seasons. Carrie. Green Mile. Just finished reading the Game Of Thrones series and I'm waiting for the next one. I also started to read Alex Cross by James Patterson, it's interesting but I've never found a detective series as good as Sherlock Holmes.

Boku no Hero Academia, by Horikoshi Kouhei.
This one has a bit of an "X-Men" vibe to it. Basically, 80% of all people on earth have super powers, and this manga's setting is one of the best schools for super heroes, taking only the best of the best, a "school for the gifted" if you will. ;P
Also, it has a super cute frog girl in it. :3

"Erma" by Brandon Santiago.
You know those creepy little girls with the long black hair that are so popular in horror movies and games these days? Well, imagine one of those in a "Calvin and Hobbes" type of Sunday newspaper comic strip and you have "Erma".
Warning. The comic itself is totally SFW, but the site I'm linking to isn't, so if you're not interested in being flooded with questionable ads, I recommend you turn on your adblocker. Yes, I know the guy is on dA and Tumblr, but E-Hentai is so much more convenient for reading comics like these. Yeah, I said it!
