Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
Finally got around to some reading and finished "Science: A History" as well as "The Outlaw Varjak Paw." Not sure whether to move on to a book about medicine or some of the fantasy series I used to read.

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
I've started reading George Orwell's 1984, mostly because I wanted to see how it compares to the surveillance we're learning about in America and Britain. In the first chapter there was an interesting bit.
And compare that to what the FBI has said about drones not needing a warrant. In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered for an instant like a blue-bottle, and darted away again with a curving flight. It was the Police Patrol, snooping into people's windows.
Some things are better than in 1984, some things are just as bad and some things are probably worse. The FBI's Stephen D. Kelly replied that the FBI believes that people watched by drones do not have "reasonable expectation of privacy" because "there is no physical trespass involved." So if a drone hovers quietly above your backyard, filming everything you do, it's just fine — because it never actually touched your personal property.

"The Beast and his Pet High School Girl". It's definitely one of the weirdest mangas I've read in quite a while. It's about a high school girl who gets abducted and taken to a world populated by anthros to live as a pet. It's a non-hentai manga, but the site it's hosted on is primarily a hentai site, so I don't know if it's okay for me to link it in the PG13 section of the forum.

The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft, Currently on the short story "The Street", published in 1919. Also working my way through The Black Swan by Nicholas Nassim Taleb, which is rather interesting.
I have won at least one Internet.

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
I linked this to some friends a while back and they all liked it, so you know what? Screw it. The comic is not hentai, so I'm totally gonna link it. Just um... don't look at any of the other comics or galleries on that site if you're under 18, okay? >.>Contrast wrote:"The Beast and his Pet High School Girl". As with all manga, it's read from right to left.

I've finished 1984 and moved on to Watership Down by Richard Adams.
In between I also read the short story There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury because I heard it was referenced in Fallout 3. It's only four pages and worth a read.

I'm currently re-reading Eldest, from the Inheritance Cycle (to re-cap)..with the intention of FINALLY pushing through till the end
I started reading in 2006 just after the horrendous excuse for a film, Eragon, came out...I read until half-way through book three and have been sitting with that and the final one for several years..reluctant to read because I don't want it to end

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
I got the last book for Christmas the year it came out (2011) but still haven't read it. It's not that they're bad or anything, I've enjoyed the earlier ones, but the size is just so intimidating!Dredge wrote:I started reading in 2006 just after the horrendous excuse for a film, Eragon, came out...I read until half-way through book three and have been sitting with that and the final one for several years..reluctant to read because I don't want it to end
I'm currently reading The Fact of Evolution by Cameron M Smith.

Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
I've started to re-read "Firestarter" by Stephen King. Andy McGee is probably one of the most heroic characters he's ever created, and I bet almost nobody has ever even heard of him.
Re: What are you reading RIGHT NOW? (Apart from this post)
I got the first one as a birthday gift the year it came out, and the second when that came out. The third for some reason got skipped, so I read it in the school library because I was just too curious at the time. I got the fourth one as a gift after that, but I promised myself that I wouldn't read it until my collection was complete. Now I'm too busy to be reading fiction anyway, but the incompleteness bothers me every time I visit my old bedroom at my parents' house.Rakuen Growlithe wrote:I got the last book for Christmas the year it came out (2011) but still haven't read it. I was so excited when I heard it was being adapted into a movie, but when I watched it I died a little inside.

"Count Your Sheep". It's kinda like Calvin and Hobbs, but with a girl and a sheep. I haven't made up my mind on whether it's cute or stupid just yet, but it is a relaxing way to kill a few minutes.

I've read up to the end of 2004 now, and I must say, for a light little comic strip about a little girl and her imaginary sheep friend, some parts of this story are unexpectedly heartbreakingly sad.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course, it just seems so out of character.
