They actually discuss that in the audio commentary (I wish more games would do that). During development they experimented with the idea of making extra adult antlions spawn whenever you killed a grub, but they quickly scrapped it because it went against the purpose of the grubs as health dispensers.

Those caves are full of antlions (acidlion and guardian variants too). I can't recall ever seeing antlions in HL1.
