Sub-forum category re-ordering?

#1

Post by Leeward »

The more I look at the categories of sub-forums, the less they make sense to me. I have a re-ordering suggestion.

Current order:

> Officialness
--- Announcements, rules and FAQ
--- Help and suggestions
> Furry fandom
--- Introductions
--- Furry chat
--- Furry accessories
--- Fursuits
--- Plushies
> Fun stuff
--- Games and silliness
--- Role plays
--- Art
--- Photos
--- The writing club
> IT and Gaming
--- IT Hardware
--- IT Software
--- Design and Development
--- PC Gaming
--- Console Gaming
--- Mobile and Web-based Games
--- Tabletop Gaming
> The world out there
--- Discussion
--- Venting and support
--- Music
--- Movies and TV
--- Sci-tech
> Marketplace
--- General Marketplace
> Regionals
--- Whole of South Africa (Everywhere)
--- Cape Town - Western Cape
--- Jozi - Gauteng
--- Durbs - KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape
--- Limpopo and Mpumalanga
--- Freestate

Suggested order:

> Officialness
--- Announcements, rules and FAQ
--- Help and suggestions
> Furry fandom
--- Introductions
--- Furry chat
--- Role plays
--- Furry accessories
--- Fursuits
--- Plushies
> Non-furry life
--- Games and silliness
--- Discussion
--- Venting and support
> Arts and entertainment
--- Art
--- Photos
--- The writing club [Rename "Literature"?]
--- Music
--- Movies and TV
> IT and Gaming
--- Sci-tech [Eliminate and place topics in relevant sub-forums here (only 49 topics)]
--- IT Hardware ["IT" superfluous?]
--- IT Software [ditto]
--- Design and Development
--- PC Gaming
--- Console Gaming
--- Mobile and Web-based Games
--- Tabletop Gaming
[Note: no "The world out there" any more]
> Regionals
--- General Marketplace [Why have a "Marketplace" category with one item?]
--- Whole of South Africa (Everywhere)
--- Cape Town - Western Cape
--- Jozi - Gauteng
--- Durbs - KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape
--- Limpopo and Mpumalanga
--- Freestate

Any amendments or comments? I know I will have missed the hidden sub-forums because I don't have access to them, but I hope it makes sense including those.

The marketplace doesn't only have one item. There is an adult marketplace as well. Some of the changes do look good though. I wouldn't call a section "non-furry life" but rather keep that "the world out there." Sci-tech is rather underused.

Here's some further suggestions though. Gaming is entertainment. What about putting all gaming threads in a single place but including the platform in the name?
e.g. "[PC] Diablo III" or "[PS4]Franchise 8"

I like the idea of putting all gaming together under entertainment, but the platform prefix thing might be tedious to enforce.
So considering what you just said, that would make it like this:

> Officialness
--- Announcements, rules and FAQ
--- Help and suggestions
> Furry fandom
--- Introductions
--- Furry chat
--- Role plays
--- Furry accessories
--- Fursuits
--- Plushies
> The world out there
--- Games and silliness
--- Discussion
--- Venting and support
> Arts and entertainment
--- Art
--- Photos
--- The writing club [Rename "Literature"?]
--- Music
--- Movies and TV
--- Gaming [Platform prefix on each thread]
> IT and technology
--- Sci-tech [Eliminate and place topics in relevant sub-forums here (only 49 topics)]
--- IT Hardware ["IT" superfluous?]
--- IT Software [ditto]
--- Design and Development ["Programming"?]
> Marketplace
--- General Marketplace
--- [Adult Marketplace]
> Regionals
--- Whole of South Africa (Everywhere)
--- Cape Town - Western Cape
--- Jozi - Gauteng
--- Durbs - KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape
--- Limpopo and Mpumalanga
--- Freestate

We'll have to see how the prefix system would work. On the other hand maybe it wouldn't be needed. If a game is platform specific then it could be easy to tell and if a game is on multiple platforms you can discuss the game in one thread. The only issue might be if someone doesn't know what platform but that's just one "wasted" click so perhaps not a big deal.

Here's another thought for simplifying the forum. What if we took "furry accessories," "fursuits" and "plushies" and split them into just two sections; "fursuits and clothing" and "plushies and toys." Most of the accessories are tails and collars and things that are part fursuit and also worn.

I'd also be happy to move the marketplace to the world out there and the yiffy marketplace into the yiffy section. I like the idea of all the yiff in one place and fewer sections but Valerion wanted to split up all the yiff (and leaving things as they are got the largest vote in his poll). We'd need his agreement before I go around rearranging anything.

The games thing makes sense, the platform doesn't really matter if you're talking about the same game. I really like the worn vs. not worn reordering, it works better logically. I don't think moving the marketplaces is good though, may as well keep those where they are, even though for members with restricted access it shows only one item in that category.

Updated list:

> Officialness
--- Announcements, rules and FAQ
--- Help and suggestions
> Furry fandom
--- Introductions
--- Furry chat
--- Role plays
--- Fursuits, accessories and clothing
--- Plushies and toys
> The world out there
--- Games and silliness
--- Discussion
--- Venting and support
> Arts and entertainment
--- Art
--- Photos
--- The writing club [Rename "Literature"?]
--- Music
--- Movies and TV
--- Gaming [All platforms]
> IT and technology
--- Sci-tech [Eliminate and place topics in relevant sub-forums here (only 49 topics)]
--- IT Hardware ["IT" superfluous?]
--- IT Software [ditto]
--- Design and Development ["Programming"?]
> Marketplace
--- General Marketplace
--- [Adult Marketplace]
> Regionals
--- Whole of South Africa (Everywhere)
--- Cape Town - Western Cape
--- Jozi - Gauteng
--- Durbs - KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape
--- Limpopo and Mpumalanga
--- Freestate

I am not in favour of prefixes. People will forget them sooner or later. This is why I prefer separate boards for various different things.

But is the platform really relevant? Like Rakuen said, a game is either platform-specific (in which case it is implied) or multi-platform (in which case you're still talking about the same game). Why separate them on that basis?

I agree with Leeward, on a dedicated gaming forum, separating games by platforms would make sense, but here it does not.

Setting aside the gaming issue for now, what do you think of the other proposed changes?

I am in a bit of a stressful situation at work, which is why I have not commented. I will try to look at it the weekend in detail.

Have you had a chance to examine this, Valerion?
